There are somewhat comparable things in the states, but the perception of our most similar analoguesituation is far less tasteful and viewed in a more generally negative light. Not saying gravure idols are high class but it's just different. Also not saying this is necessarily a sufficient enough reason for an edit in localization.

Well... there certainly isn't any kind of consistency in the censorship of TMS, except that it looks to be another troll job of Nintendo of America. In other games they added internet humor that wasn't appropriate at all, so it all seems like they do such things either for the lulz or to cause controversy in order to draw more attention to the games.

I didn'tsay it was consistent or even smart. Just that there was some reasoning in that specific change.
As for other changes, can't say. I think Fates was also a product of the size of the project. None of Nintendo's departments are large so I image having to do Fates at the same time as and immediately after XCX was quite the strain.
