This week really tells us so much about the Wii U in Japan.

What were people expecting?

More, a lot of people were extremely sure that XCX would do over 100k.

But I'm also talking about hardware, in march the PS4 had several weeks above 40k and was always above 30k thanks to game releases, showing that the main thing missing for the system is the software support. This week is Golden week, the Wii U had 2 relatively big releases, one exclusive that came with a bundle, and the system can barely scratch past 20k and can only barely outdo the PS4, that's just really telling imo.

Feels like we hear this everytime new releases happen. We already had MK8/SSBU/etc to tell us how wiiu is doing in japan. This didn't change anything, when Splatoon releases, we'll hear about the same thing as you are saying by someone else and the cycle will continue.... :o

What the heck? How does Wii U only do 20K with 2 significant game releases and a bundle?

Where was everybody when MK8/SSBU/SM3DW released in japan? :0

Highly unlikely that digital is more than 10%.

Nintendo has stated that their digital sales exceed 10%  of total software and that Japanese make up a third of all digital sales. Digital sales for first party games sit at around 13%. This game was pushed hard digitally and Nintendo already said its digital sales were high. So over 10% is definitely not "highly" unlikely. (source: below)

But that includes the 3DS doesn't it? Because digital sales on handheld devices are higher than on consoles.

Sure, but we are talking about averages here. It seems like Nintendo games sell 10% digitally as the low-end, regardless of whether or not they are on handhelds or home console, they are just even more succesful on handhelds, and the rates are consistently increasing with time for both platforms. My problem with the phrasing of the quote was "highly" unlikely, when we know that first party Nintendo games, even on home platforms, have been doing 10% consistently and that the percentage is increasing with time. We also know that this game in particular benefits from a digital download more than usual. 10% is a practically given, and more than 10%, while unlikely, isn't "highly" unlikely.

“ Compare that to Bayonetta 2. That’s a huge game, and could take up a large part of the memory in the 32-gig Wii U. That’s a game with a digital percent on the lower side, today about 10 percent or so. Our mentality is, we want the consumer to have the choice based on what makes sense for you, what makes sense for the type of game it is.”

Dunno if joking or not, but if not i find it a little ironic when people say this especially when 3ds is 1st place in HW sales with 18.5mil+ Userbase already xD

Weren't people expecting like a 2-1, 3-1 ratio for WiiU vs PS4?

Using Dengeki numbers... xD

Use Media Create or Famitsu as hardware tracker, they are much better!
Media Create:
3DS: 25,948
Vita: 18,435

Famitsu:

3DS: 27,210
Vita: 18,163

Edit: And don't forget that 3DS had a big game this week and Vita not!
