Forums - Gaming - Forget financial consequences - design your fav company's next console

Often people talk about what they'd like to see in a successor to a console, but (wisely) tend to keep it somewhat realistic

Here, let's do that but with a twist. It really just needs to be physically/scientifically possible; financial considerations don't matter. It may be something that would bankrupt the company or would not sell well in the market. Just forget about that for a second and think about your ideal successor

For me, i'd make the PS5 a PSVita2. Explanation ahead

It'd be called a PS5 for marketing reasons, but It'd not be more powerful than the PS4. In fact, it could even be slightly weaker than the PS4. The box would come with two devices; one is a handheld, the other is a PSTV-style box. The hardware in both is identical and they run the same games. The box is for when you want to play on a bigger screen, handheld for portable gaming.

2 reasons for me wanting this:

a) The obvious convenience of freely switching between home console/living room style gaming and portable gaming while using the same system and playing the same games.

b) Slowing down hardware jumps. Advanced graphics are pretty. I like them. But they've been too costly for this industry and the cost of high production values in modern games has killed too much stuff, be it studios or IPs, because even selling millions ends up not being enough. We need to bring the costs down, and instead of living in a rich&poor dichotomy (lavish AAA on one end, cheap indies on the other), we'd try to go back to the PS1-PS2 era. I'm not much of a fan of Nintendo but I actually think they got it right with the Wii and the Wii U as far as hardware is concerned. That's the kind of hardware jump i want to see. Nothing big. keep those AAA budgets under control.

How about you?

I want a Nintendo console that will send hookers into my room everytime I complete a level. These are $1000 hookers btw and the console should cost me no more than $100 to purchase. Also it has the power of Quad 390X with an intel i7 5960X + 64gb of ram

And yes, all that is possible if you think about it if Money is of no concern

Oh and the launch title is artifical academy 3

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Well you asked me what I personally want, so here:

I want something that plays games, and that is it. Remember older consoles like PS1 and NES? Put the game in (or CD, in PS1's case), turn it on, and voila you are ready to go. I don't personally like how every device, from TV's to Watches to Fridges to Consoles, has tried to become a Jack-of-all-trades. I will use my laptop for PC tasks. I don't want to go on a web browser on my console. I just want to play games. Dedicate all that hardware towards playing games and give it a sick start up sound and BOOM; sold

#1 Amb-ass-ador

I really don't know what I would do with the extra budget, a console isn't a PC and I wouldn't want anything perversely powerful or capable. If you were to ask me the console would have Gen 6 level 3D graphics (PS2/GC) with a custom processor and all that, but output to HD and support stereoscopic 3D. And with a special chip used exclusively for 2D graphics with some special modes and quirks.

It's no fun fantasizing about a machine with no constraints. The most remarkable forms of design come from limitations. It's like asking someone to write a story about a man who wishes for infinite wishes. The story is basically over.

Name: Nintendo NX (placeholder lol I can't think of a good name)

In development since 2011

Release date and price: November 22, 2015 for $349 in the U.S., December 4 for 349 Euros in Europe, and December 12 for 48,000 yen in Japan

Specs:

  • Intel x86-based multi-core processor "Mario," 28nm process, 2 billion transistors, 8 active cores at 2GHz each, 256 KB L2 cache per core, 2.6 MB of FLR-L3 cache per core, 32MB of PSRAM
  • 8GB GDDR5 main memory, and an extra (separate) 2GB DDR3 memory for the OS
  • Custom 28nm GPU by AMD "Link," Engine frequency: 1GHZ, Memory frequency: 900MHZ, 1GB GDDR5 memory
  • One 1TB 7,200 RPM hard drive
  • Slot loading optical disc drive (25GB per layer, up to four layers)
  • Regular controller with the ergonomics of a GameCube controller
  • Other features: SD memory card slot, 1 USB 3.0 Port in front, sensor bar output, 2 at rear, HDMI Out Port, Ethernet port and Wifi, Dolby Digital 7.1 64-bit audio processing

Focus on hardware would be processing power for AI and physics. For example, look at this video. How the computer learns and adapts. For example, in Zelda, the townspeople would have (crude) AI instead of inputted commands.

Launch titles:

  • From Nintendo: Splatoon, Star Fox, Yoshi's Wooly World, Devil's Third, Wii Fit Advanced (and heavily marketed)
  • From Third Parties: Batman: Arkham Knight, Star Wars: Battlefront, The Witcher 3, Madden NFL 16, Need for Speed, NBA 2K16, Metal Gear Solid V, Assassin's Creed: Victory, The Division (if not delayed), Rory McIlroy's Pro PGA Tour 16, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5, Rock Band 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Mad Max, Grand Theft Auto V with PC graphics, and 2 exclusive games from third parties (like from Ubisoft and Sega)

2016 Nintendo titles:

  • Animal Crossing NX
  • The Legend of Zelda (but with OOT/TP graphics)
  • New Shigeru Miyamoto IP (a "Swan Song" so to speak)
  • 3D Super Mario platformer akin to Super Mario 64 and SM Galaxy by Nintendo Software Development Tokyo 2 (3D World developers)
  • New Retro Studios first person shooter (something to compete with Titanfall/Halo/Call of Duty)
  • An exclusive from a Western Developer, something that is like Last of Us/Uncharted. Cinematic (but not ridiculous like The Order) and GOTY status

2017 Nintendo titles:

  • Metroid NX
  • Fully featured Pokemon RPG/MMORPG... biggest push in Nintendo history
  • Super Smash Bros. NX
  • Mario Kart NX
  • New killer app action adventure game from Nintendo Software Development 1 (Galaxy developers). Something similar to Shenmue that uses the advanced AI and physics processing power
  • New WRPG exclusive

Also moneyhat third parties and even try to get a couple exclusives from them. But nothing silly like Sonic: The Lost World. Some killer apps for sure.

Quality of Life

A whole new product line for the NX that deals with health, fitness, and homestyle life type things. Basically this would be the gimmick to try and win back some of the casuals that left. Would also focus on educational games.

Online features

Nintendo Connect (if Connect isn't trademarked anymore):

  • Free online matchmaking via P2P
  • Unlimited messaging and 2,000 friends
  • A virtual console with a TON of games.... basically what virtual console was supposed to be. Possibly a subscription service
  • Miiverse to be a fully fledged social network with Facebook/Twitch/Twitter/YouTube integration, every player can also have a profile with bios/favorite games/wish list, etc. etc.
  • Ability to group friends (for example - coworkers and family)
  • One account
  • Intrusive ads

Nintendo Connect Advanced:

  • $40 a year
  • SmartMatch matchamking via dedicated servers. Superior matchmaking, plus (optional) ability to play opponents based on locality, language, reputation, age, etc. etc. Dedicated servers for better connections and faster matchmaking
  • Ability to change username
  • Up to 12 accounts
  • Family share plan
  • 25GB cloud storage
  • Ability to appear offline and/or receive specific notifications
  • Ad free
  • Significantly faster downloads and early released demos and even games
  • Discounts and free games

Online will also get a significant focus, complete opposite of now.

Other features:

  • Battery low notification
  • Backward compatibility with GameCube, Wii, and Wii U games
  • Support for Wii and Wii U accessories
  • Achievements, but with coins/power stars instead. For example: 10 gamerscore points = 1 coin, 20G = red coin (2 coins), 50G = blue coin (5 coins), and 1,000G/Platinum Trophy = Power Star
  • Advanced voice commands like Kinect but without the expensive Kinect peripheral
  • TV features (think like Roku), and integration with Dish network servers,
  • Custom backgrounds for the O.S.
  • Folders in the O.S. for easy organization
  • iPhone and Android apps where you can go on your Miiverse profile and update and even purchase things. Even use it for Remote Play

Was thinking the same thing while reading the OP

All I want is free online gaming.

As I said there are constraints.. just not financial ones. Companies already do things that end up flopping so something that'd flop isn't entirely unrealistic, just unlikely.
