Forums - Microsoft - Phil Spencer: "We Haven't Announced Hololens as Xbox Accessory." "Standalone Device"

doesn't matter. hololens as it i now is a first gen of a future tech. it wont be obvious for 5 years + what its uses really are

It is near the end of the end....

Good to hear. I would honestly think this is for the better, as Hololens will not be held back and it's full potential can be easier achieved than if it were paired up with Xbox One.

Translation: We hope to make more money in the professional sector as a premium high cost device.

"We haven’t publicly talked about what those are, but you can imagine, as we continue to drive and get success with HoloLens, those scenarios will become obvious and developers will take advantage of them.”

  • Translation: We don't know what games will actually work with this, it will be as limited as Kinect games.

Not true. Pretty much any game could be built to use holo lens. Not just motion ones lol kinect

any game could use it,but will they?........................nope

its just like motion and touch technologies, its not necessary for gaming and it distracts from gaming

AR is he future period... The real question is when will it be market ready... And who will be first to make it viable commercially in terms of specs and price....

Anybody doubting that is as narrow minded than people saying man would never fly or go to space or will populate orher planets and why not other systems or galaxies... The question is not really if but when and what will it take... For one terraforming and transgenerational space travel... Which will be achievable... For the other a decent price a confortable compact stand alone device with a full FOV... Which will be achievable sooner than the other...
Now who will be first to WIN that race is up in the air...

But saying it's a gimmick.... Yeah like flying right???
(this goes for motion control too) and don't get me started on both combined... Anybody dismissing it on the long term is either in grave clinical denial (hint you should get that checked) or severely blind (you should get that checked too)....

Nobody is dismissing the future potential.
It would be awesome to sit around a table with your friends from all over the world and play some board games. Both game and people not in the room represented by holograms. That's still a long way away. Even the vision MS is currently presenting is a futuristic vision, same thing MS did with Kinect.
The current product is a bit of a gimmick when it comes to gaming, same as Kinect. Sure it will work, yet in limited ways and won't revolutionize the way we play games. No air travel yet.

VR on the otherhand is already widely used by games.

Yeah but VR is rather old tech and has been viable for a while now... The real novelty here is head motion tracking and price/confort ratio... But it is rather limited beside first person games it is nothing more than a close up display... To be frank outside of FPS and racing games and other Sims for which I will love the tech I'd much rather enjoy my 65 SUHD curved screen I'll be getting myself for christmas... Or a nice high video projector

AR on the other hand with a full FOV lets you enjoy both setting without discrimination and less limitation... The reason I get behind techs like touch more than a decade ago (before iPod) or Kinect and probably hololens is because those are or were the tech of tomorrow that need support... VR is a yesterday tech that's about ready for mass market... Nothing really exciting in supporting it... But sure plenty to be enjoyed in the near future....

But bashing new embryonic techs with a lot of potential is about as productive than the people that jailed Galileo... They are just encouraging apathy and stagnation...and seriously lack of ambition and imagination...

I hope Sony will really get behind Morpheus and will try to go a step further (Sony rarely does, they like to play it ultra safe, especially now with the current line of conduct at the top management) not like they did with eye toy and move and other add on...

For now I'll keep my bet on Oculus when it comes down to VR tech and its future....

Never thought it was a gaming focused device to begin with.

Phil Spencer:  "We Haven't Announced Hololens as Xbox Accessory." "Standalone Device"

The Xbox division boss commented that while an Xbox One/HoloLens union could happen somewhere down the line, the real aim was to make the device a viable piece of tech in its own right. “The tethered scenarios around VR I think are interesting, but we were going for something different. Not being tethered to either a PC, Xbox or a phone as part of the solution was one of our design challenges for HoloLens, and we did that.”

“Well, we haven’t announced it as an Xbox accessory, but it sits within one team, and we have the conversations,” said Spencer in a recent interview with Edge. “Right now, we want to focus on a standalone, untethered device and make sure that we can prove out that scenario.”

Spencer added that should HoloLens come to Xbox, developers will definitely see the benefits of using the VR tech in certain scenarios. “Now we can say, ‘Well, OK, if I do have an Xbox or a PC, what are those scenarios?’ We haven’t publicly talked about what those are, but you can imagine, as we continue to drive and get success with HoloLens, those scenarios will become obvious and developers will take advantage of them.”

Typo?

IMO gaming applications will be fairly limited. But what happened to recent comments about having bought Minecraft specifically with Hololens in mind? Perhaps Minecraft and PC/Xbox do not go hand in hand. I suppose if you can load the game directly into Hololens, or have it running from Teh Cloudez then there's no tethering to Xbox or PC.
