I think No Man's Sky will but hardly no one is talking about it. Hence why I put a link in my sig.

Cool links. Haven't heard of many of those games though. Kind of shows bigger isn't always more fun.

Will we see game worlds this gen 2X-4X larger than GTA5?? I think yes. As games appear on this gen only devs will allow players to install massive amounts of content on the consoles HD. I think we will start seeing HUGE games within the next year or two! |
Elder Scrolls II in 1996 is still the largest game world that is scripted. 64,000 Square miles. Skyrim 15. Xenoblade X 154. The Witcher 3 136. GTAV said to be 50. Xenoblade Wii 30. Nothing has yet come close and people are still discovering new dungeons in ESII.
I seriously think its getting too large already. Games loose a lot of focus when it has these homungus worlds, and youre left just wandering aimelessly or doing some petty fetch quests or killing X of a certain type of monster most of the time. The Witcher 3 promisses to actualy give you interesting stuf to do that will get you wandering around, also promisses to have varying scenarios to explore, if it manages all that than great that it has such a vast word, if it end up like Skyrim where you explore the same dull looking caves 500 times, kill the same enemies everytime and is driven by some very shallow storylines just for the sake of having an open world itll suck very badly.
They can grow as large as they want, as long as travel doesn't become painful/tedious and the developers don't go bankrupt or anything.

Indeed, bigger worlds filled with empty space where there's nothing to do in between relatively small areas where gaming actually happens is pointless. Like the real world mostly filled with boring empty space with nothing to do. Why do I want that replicated in a game?
Better to give the illusion of hugeness than actual hugeness.

As large as money and time constraints will allow.
Honestly if gaming worlds get much bigger it would bankrupt most companies.
Although if new areas are constantly added I can see it working.
