Forums - Gaming - DFC: Will Sony, Microsoft remain relevant in games by 2019? (85% of the Market Digital?)

It's interesting. But I see it becoming about "content" much like streaming video has become (with the likes of Netflix and Amazon now commissioning their own content for their services).

PlayStation Now seems to be the start of this from Sony. Windows 10 being a cross platform OS seems to be the start of MS implementing it?

But the way I see it going, yes the machines this content is accessed from will be wide ranging from PCs, tablets etc. I do think there'll also be dedicated set top boxes too.

I see gaming being delivered in 2 ways, either something you purchase (much as you do from Steam/PSN/XBL/EShop now), or something you rent (maybe streamed or maybe downloaded locally but expires after X amount of time or when your subscription ends).

PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Origin etc will become competing market places for these services (possibly new ones, and also whatever route Nintendo goes down) and access will not require a specific companies box as numbers accessing will be key. I'm not sure it'll be as soon as 2019. However I certainly see it going this way in the next 20 years.

Pretty much agree with everything you said.  I also think 2019 is a little too soon.

Lol these doom articles will never stop. You know PC and mobile do those numbers because of all the casual games right? Doesnt LoL have like 50 million users? Candy Crush Saga like 100 million? How much did that affect console gaming? Console games (traditional games that are designed for controllers) will always stay relevant.

But to answer your question, I guess Sony will have the largest pie of them all, they''ll start expanding their user base beyond their consoles. This year it's going on Sony bluray players and some TVs. It's slowly going to be on all sorts of devices, even PC eventually. PS Now type services are the future and Sony basically has a monopoly now that they acquired OnLive tech.

Research firm sees PC and mobile grabbing larger and larger share of the expected $100 billion pie

He continued, "There are also the unrealistic expectations both companies set for their investors. Prior to the new generation launch there was speculation among some manufacturers and analysts that the market for this new generation could be as large as one billion units worldwide. We always thought success would be 250 million units combined for a given generation but now we don't see this generation doing that many. The PlayStation 4 could get over 100 million but the Xbox One will probably not reach that level. So clearly expectations were not set in line with reality."

Bullshit. Only Microsoft was fool enough to predcit that, and that's because they thought a whole bunch of non-gamers would by a $500 machine to be able to watch TV and control it with Kinect. Sony and Nintendo were never stupid enough to think the console market could be worth 1 billion unit sales in a generation. 1 billion units means a game console in nearly every house in the developed world an a lot of houses in the developing world> It was never going to happen and it was deluded speculation from the Greenbergs and Mattricks of Microsoft's little world of fairy dust and magic rainbows.

As to the over all analysis that console unit sales would fall well short of 250 million, HELLO! plenty of us were saying it 18 months ago. These guys are real geniuses figuring this out only now. But that also doesn't mean consoles are doomed. The 6th gen was considered to be a very successful generation, and it's total console sales only just broke through 200 million, but it required PS2 to hold on for several years after the 7th gen started. I would be concerned if this gen ended with less than 150 million, but I don't think that will happen.

Look. Jay, I like you. You are one of the few users here who understands logic. What I said was from my point of view. I dont like MMOs (as I have mentioned earlier). I also dont like indies. Most of them are garbage anyways.

And steam games are not cheap. Its a myth. "Old" games are cheap at steam. Look at this. Plus I can resell steam games like PS4 games.

Mortal kombat x is $59.99.

Steam games are indeed cheap, and when they aren't they can be the same price and in end the improved visuals can be a bonus.

They are not as cheaper as internet tells me. Plus I cant sell them. So this is a big issue.

As I have stated earlier I done care how much better a game looks. I care about playing them. Example, I cant play bloodborne in PC. Can I? Nope. Its games not system dictates my decision.

The only thing I have to say: If his kids are having trouble turning on a console, he has some damn stupid kids.

You're right, steam isn't all bargain basement prices as some would say. It just has very frequent sales and incredibly huge sales at certain times of the year.

PC software in undoubtedly a lot cheaper than console gaming. It was a big driving factor in my getting a PC in January. It was £800, but the savings I'll make on software across the generation will pretty much completely offset that and I get the better versions of many games that way.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

One other thing, Jaywood, I've noticed him post lots of articles with sensationalist content and headlines.

Consoles will remain relevant until someone streamlines PC gaming to the point where joe public doesn't have to scan a block of minimum system reqs to know if their tower / whatever is good enough.

This would change if say Steam released one version of Steam Machine, and every PC release that could work on it both had a sticker on the cover (or just a SM-specific partition of Steam) and have an "optimized for Steam Machine" setting.

And as for streaming replacing everything...heh. Maybe in the far-flung future, where internet doesn't suck ass in large swaths of even 1st world countries.
