Forums - General Discussion - Comcast throttling gamers?

We Know comcast throttles bit torrent users, nut i have come here to ask have they done it to the gamers as well.

I do not use bit torrent or any of their ilk, because I figure if its good enough for me to own, its good enough for me to buy.

My wondering on this topic began about a year ago when i had comcast out to check out why my high speed connection was so slow.  after the tech checked my computer (he needed my help i was on a mac) made sure i had locked down my wireless, he went about checking the cables because like i said in the call to comcast originaly i had high packet loss, and unstable speed. nothing wrong with the cables. then he checked the modem it was fine. he went out and checked the local hub for the area, I live about 50 yards from it. it was fine. he made a few calls, turns out I was on a list of people to have their network speed turned down, becuase in their opinion I was using too much bandwidth, now they wouldnt tell me how much, but they agreed to turn me back to full speed as long as i kept my bandwith use down, out side of video conferencing for work, and sending work to print houses or to clients to look at, my use is very low, aim, msn, web surfing, and video gaming.  it is not like im using massive amounts of up and down stream.

now after this I had moved my work into a studio with some friends, more professional was our goal at the time. this lowered my band width use at home, again about a  month ago the same problem came up, 4 months after i moved my work out of the home... aparently gaming is just to much for comcast to handle, for them only email, and basic web surfing and chatting

unfortunatly because of where i live i have no other options. Knology stopped expanding my way due to contracts with the city about 2 years ago... 4 blocks away from me... at&t can not expand to my area due  until legisation in our state is finished. charter closed their doors here. none of the satalite based services work in our area for legal reasons too....

Comcast = trash

Brighthouse I believe does the same thing. I have a complaint with the BBB filed against them over unstable network speeds.

if that was available in my area i would so get that, even though my internet speed has 15mbps download, I sadly have 3mbps upload which is nothing compared to yours.

Don't you have a contract about your connection speed? I mean if you do have, it shouldn't matter how much are you using it.

How about mobile internet? Do you have it available in your area and is the speed enough?

-- If what you happened occured, call the BBB, your Congress-person, the FCC,
etc.

This is the type of unspecified behavior that has been getting Internet providers (esp. Comcast) in trouble.

I also know that cable has trouble with the more users on a line.

I have Comcast (formerly Adelphia -- its Broadband got to me first) and have not had any problem. This is the battle that will be on-going for the Internet and why downloading all content will not be viable for the next decade.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Had not thought about callin the BBB, thanx for that, as for our congressman he has already made it clear how he feels by backing bill keeping comcast as the big player in tennessee.

I had seriously considered going with a mobile carrier especialy with sprints unlimted for 99. bucks until i saw that you can not set that to a highspeed card, cell phones only. verision caps data at 15gig per month download, do not know what the upstream is.

the only real hope i have for comcast, is that they have been rolling out fiber in our area because of the realtivly high density. it has not reached me yet, but i have heard good things from friends who have it.

side note, my router just died. anyone ever use netgear? I had a linksys one, but netgear is so much cheaper for the same thing

Yes, Comcast sucks. Check out this link for proof of their "technological devilry":

I think it's ridiculous that companies are beginning to do stuff like that, I figure, I'm paying $40-$50 a month for my internet, I ought to be able to use it as well as I please.

I mean if you're paying for 7mpbs you should be able to use 7mbps all the time. If they don't like it, they should stop offering such fast connections, instead of saying you can use your internet 2 hours a day and after that you get dial-up speed.
