Nintendo hasn't been "cool" since the early 90s when Sega out-marketed them.

They kinda flirted with being cool in the mid-late 1990s when they had games like Killer Instinct, Kobe Bryant NBA Courtside, Star Wars, and most especially GOLDENEYE.

That was the "cool" game to own in the late 90s. But they've never really been that "cool" again.

Outside of a few IP how do u expect Nintendo to make their games "cool"? How do they make Kirby, Yoshi, Mario Party, Captain Toad, Donkey Kong appeal to the mainstream crowd?

They can't and they shouldn't.

What they have already pleases their audience, to a reasonable extent. When Disney wanted to appeal to a different audience, they didn't change Mickey or Cinderella to make them "cool," they bought Marvel, bought Star Wars, and made PotC. When square wanted to appeal to a different audience, they didn't change Final Fanta- well they did, and it fucked them over, but then they made/bought Eidos and bought Tomb Raider, Theif, Hitman, and Deus Ex.

Nintendo shouldn't make their games cool; Nintendo should make cool games.

Hmmm, you must have read almost every post I've made in every thread that talks about what Nintendo needs to do over the last 2 years.

But what have they done? They've uncoolified the shooter genre by making Splatoon.

I think what many Nintnedo fans, but not Nintendo themselves, can't grasp (for better or worse) is fun=/=cool. Splatoon my be the funnest most enjoyable multiplayer shooter ever in the history of gaming. But it is not and can never be cool. And its lack of coolness means its gamer appeal is very limited.

As I suggested a few posts back, gamers are generally a very uncool bunch of people, and many of them crave coolness. Those who are secure in their uncoolness (and those few who are actually cool) will play whatever they want and be unaffected but the uncoolness of what they play. Those who crave coolness need to play games that feel cool. And they will prefer platforms that have more games that feel cool. But all games are uncool in reality, which is why gaming will never make anyone cool. If a cool person plays games they will still be cool. But if an uncool person plays games, playing games won't make them cool, even though they may play all the same games as a cool person, and be better and more skilled at those games than the cool person.

Nintendo gets this, and they are comfortable and celebrate their uncoolness. But this makes uncool people who want to see themselves and be seen as cool very uncomfortable. Hence while they may really want to play these uncool Nintendo games, contemplating doing so makes them feel very uncool, so they don't. Ironically uncool people who are comfortable and embrace their uncoolness take on a certain coolness of their own.

I myself would be a Nintendo gamer but for the fact that I really cannot stand anything related to Mario. Mario gives me the creeps like clowns give some people the creeps. To me he gives off a serious pedo vibe and I just can't get over it.

I dunno if I would say Ubisoft is cool myself... I thought X was cool... TwT You do make points. Ninten doesn`t seem very cool. Them doing their own thing I think is cool, but that sure doesn`t look cool to the general public. Ninten could do a bit to look `cool` for sales. Sony has and continues to be the cool console.

Link never should, or will be like Legolas, though. Link doesn't need to be cool for the mainstream market. If they want something like that, they need to make make something new, rather than change something old into something it doesn't naturally evolve into.

but on the teaser trailer for zelda wii u he was cool, in fact, cooler than ever. I don't know what's your definition of cool, but for me, this is:

and the legolas thing was not literal, anyway if you don't agree, let's agree to disagree.

No, that gif and the whole promo stuff is not cool at all. That whole fallic arrow head extension slow-mo thing is just so uncool. For a weedy, androgynous, colourfully dressed child-man to be cool he needs to have  a rapier-like wit that is used to cut everyone down to size. Making such a character totally mute is just the uncool finisher.

All substance no style.

Nail on the head.

Like so many  products that fail to capture the mainstream market. You can produce something that is superior to the competition in every way but still lose because the mainstream just doesn't rate your product because the style and other superficialities don't resonate.

Coolness is often a matter of perspective, not the content being advertised. Look at the N64's Get N or Get Out campaign. The games shown were Star Fox, Wave Race, Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario 64. Yet the attitude and tone made the Nintendo brand look cool. That's what good marketing does: presents things in the right light to make them appealing. Honestly, when was being a plumber who jumped on turtles and ate shrooms ever "cool" outside of the gaming world where Nintendo's marketing MADE it cool? :P

Actually, scratch the first bit.  Coolness IS a matter of perspective.  Just look at all the myriad of trends and such that start up, purely because a specific thing takes on the "appearence" of coolness without really changing, where the marketing casts it in the right light.

And Nintendo has many games that I think could have a wider "cool" appeal. Xenoblade and Metroid are the standouts.

Nintendo is cool :P

coolness is completely subjective.

on an unrelated note, after playing Human Revolution very recently on Wii U I am very saddened that I will not be able to continue the series on this system. Oh Well, more reason to buy an Xbox One down the road.

I could go on, but this is a small example of EPIC trailers for very cool games.

Buy the Bond rights. Do it Nintendo. There's no one cooler than this mofo (sit down and shut up Batman, Master Chief and Drake combined aren't half the alpha Bond is):

Like a bawse.

Yeah, I agree with the OP. That kiddie appeal of Nintendo makes it completely uncool and thus the brand keeps being damaged, and it doesn't seem like Nintendo wants to do something about it. The first time I saw some Xenoblade Chronicles X pics with the people and their kiddy-anime faces I thought "Man, are they trying to make this game for children or what?"
