Forums - Gaming - Greatest gaming moment?

What I mean by this, what was your most memorable moment in your life related to gaming? Was it an awesome God of War sequence in which you perform an unbelievable execution? A 1 VS 5 comeback in some multiplayer online game like League of Legends or Halo? Maybe an indie game made you get them feels.

Be it nostalgia, happiness or laughs, I think we can all agree games have moved us in some ways.  I wanted to make a thread to get to share mine and read yours. Personally, I think there are two gaming segments that really got to me.

First one that comes to mind is from Super Mario Galaxy. Now, I wasn't too much of a fan of the game to be honest. In fact, I haven't even finished it. But I'd be lying if I said the game wasn't phenomenal. My favorite part of this game is probably the first playable level: Good Egg Galaxy.

Probably the best level designed by Nintendo, Good Egg Galaxy is an amazing spectacle the first time you play it. The best thing about it is how grand everything is. Flying through space with that amazing theme playing in the background...amazing.

I'd show a video of this level, but unfortunately I could only find let's play and that kinda ruins the feel of the game.

Second one that comes to mind is from my all time favorite game: Journey.

I personally think it's perfect in every regard, but what it excels at, in my opinion, is pacing. Everything just falls into place so perfectly and nothing feels too long or too short (despite being a 2-3 hour game). There's plenty of fantastic moments, but of course the best moment is probably the segment called "Road of trials" which you play roughly halfway through the game.

First game that made me cry of joy. I hear a lot of back talk about the game how it's artsy-fartsy or there's no real gameplay element. While I strongly disagree, I can respect their opinions. But I really think everyone should give this game a shot as I find it a huge disservice to not experience Journey.

Anyway, enough fanboying. What moments do you guys have to share?

Might as well start with one of my early ones... I think I was six or seven when, after months of effort and (according to my parents) enduring terrible torture, I finally killed Jaffar in Aladdin for the sega genesis. Certainly one of the more gratifying and triumphant moments of my young life... I don't think I played it again for years.

I also remember thinking I had killed him once earlier, only to see him turn into a snake and subsequently die. This game taught me many great life lessons, such as "life ain't easy", "winning ain't easy" and, most importantly, "Hooray you wo-SURPRISE, unexpected new challenge, go back to start!" :D

Older games delighted in trolling children, it seems.

Hope you don't mind if I copy and paste my answer from a previous thread lol but my opinions haven't changed much over the past month

1. The Sending (FFX):

The tone, the music, and the amazing visuals (for 2001) in this FMV sequence were absolutely bang on. The game had plenty of amazing moments, but this one invoked a very peaceful, yet sad, feeling within me, and its the scene I reference the most when FFX is mentioned.

2. The Ranch Scene (The Last of Us):

Another game with many great scenes, including many that are more iconic, but the voice acting and music in the ranch house scene made me tear up like none other.

3. Fighting Gaius (Shadow of the Colossus):

You could single out any of the boss fights within SOTC for being epic yet heartbreaking. The amazing score pumps you up, and then tears you down once you have completed slaying the majestic beast. My favorite fight was definitely against the earth knight. I remember running around in circles for 10 minutes having no idea what to do, when miraculously, he struck the right place and the path was finally clear. Bravo, Team Ico.

4. Riding into Mexico (Red Dead Redemption):

I never felt more empathetic towards John Marston than that first ride into Mexico. The scenery is barren yet beautiful, So Far Away by Jose Gonzalez begins to play, and you begin to feel the weight of Marston's journey. Beautiful touch.

5. Say what, Otacon? (Metal Gear Solid 4):

Snake is romping around his old stomping grounds, shadow moses. Just like old times! You get a trophy when you switch to birds eye view, and Otacon wants you to change to disc 2. Wait, Otacon, they only gave me one.... oh, well played Kojima.

Honorable mentions:

Welcome to Rapture/Colombia (Bioshock/Bioshock Infinite): At the beginning of each game, first encountering each of these amazing cities left a lasting impression on my brain. Ken Levine is a creative genius.

The Train Level (Uncharted 2): This is when UC2 truly made me say wow. Hanging off of a train, getting shot at by a chopper, and trying to reach Chloe. Amazeballs.

This place is huge! (Skyrim): Nothing truly has made me feel small and insignificant in a game (sorry guys, didn't play FF7 back in the old days) quite like Skyrim. When I first stepped out of Helgen and saw the immense scale of Skyrim's world, I realized I was not leaving my room for a long time.

  • Also had many memorable moments playing couch co-op Twisted Metal, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, MarioKart and Smash Brothers with my family. COD4 multiplayer also brought me a lot of joy. Finally, seeing a PS1 (and later a Wii) under the Christmas tree was pure elation lol

#1 Amb-ass-ador

I can't find the exact frame, but it's in this scene in WW:

A second before Link makes this face, Link is seen, for a breif moment making a smug "man, this thing is bad ass" face. This is right after he pulls out the Master Sword for the first time and gives it a few test swings. He looks at the sword, smirks slyly, shakes his head as if to say "I can't believe I'm even holding this thing," and slants his eyes. Then, after that half second of indulging in the coolness of the moment, he goes to this pose, where he remembers his duty and remains humble in the presence of the blade of evils bane.

Not only is this by far the most effective Master Sword moment in any Zelda game because of it's subtleties, but it is by far my favorite gaming moment of all time, because for that split second, Link and the player are completely and flawlessly in sync.

Anyone who says that there's no real gameplay element to Journey is an idiot with no understanding of video game design. I'll not respect their opinions in your stead. Journey has some of the tightest, most effective, and most intelligent use of video game mechanics of any game, period. It's up there with the likes of Tetris, Super Mario Bros., and Mega Man 2/3. It's that good.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

*Took out the pictures to not make this thread ridiculously long every page*

Oh my God, Ranch scene is probably one of the best acted scene I've ever seen in any media hands down. Ellie is just such a likable character with so much depth to her without having an absurd amount of backstory or exposition being neccesary to throw at you. Last of Us is just phenomenal all around honestly. Deserves all its praise.

Shadow of the Colossus too, but I agree Gaius was just so over the top baffling to fight against. Although I think the first Colossus will still have the strongest impact, considering I played the game without knowing anything. I haven't finished Red Dead Redemption, but I'm looking forward to getting there.
