Forums - Gaming - PS4: Dark Souls 2: Scholar Of The First Sin Comes Closest To The Developer’s Intention

With the release of Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin for both the Xbox One and PS4, Publisher Namco delivers an amazing package that’s well worth your money. The title includes all of the released content for Dark Souls 2 and has been upgrade to the magical standard of 1080p and 60FPS on both consoles.

Over the past year however it would seem that some games would run better on Sony’s PS4 compared to Microsoft’s Xbox One – mostly because of the DDR5 memory the PS4 uses. In a recent analysis by Eurogamer this would also seem to apply to Scholar of the First Sin.

According to Eurogamer the  game’s created next-gen engine comes closest to the developers intention on Sony’s PS4. Eurogamer states that the PS4 version is the best to date, with the Xbox One version coming after that.

“But it’s now clear that PS4 hands in results closest to the developer’s intention. Within the console bracket, it’s no doubt the best version to date, while Xbox One claims second place in the running owing to its less stable frame-rate. By bullishly matching Sony’s platform point-for-point across all graphical settings, Xbox One places Dark Souls 2’s visual presentation above its playability to a certain extent. However, compared to the 20-30fps performance of last-gen releases it ‘s still a fulsome upgrade for owners of Microsoft’s console” According Eurogamer”

Cinematic 48fps

So what happened to the PC version?, did that version get cancelled and is it seen as the worst dev intention version along with XB1 considering the title says PS4 and not the others?.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Not surprising when you match the graphical settings and resolutions on both consoles the PS4 has a better frame rate. But I guess some people did believe that XB1 played games better..

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

The game sustains 60fps for ~99% of the time. It's a solid 60fps game in my book.

A drop to only 48fps encountered once in several hours of gaming? Are you kidding me? It's really impressive on a souls game.

Not onyl that, but the PC version is also the best price-value. The PS4/XB version are $60 for everything, while the PC version is $50 for everything. But on PC if you already have a Dark Souls II with DLC it only costs $19.99, or Dark Souls II without DLC it only costs $29.99. I don't think I've read anything about the console versions getting an upgrade path for a cheaper price if you own a PS3/360 version of the game.

So here's how it shakes down: There are two versions of Scholar of the First Sin on PC; one on DirectX9 and the other on DirectX11. The former is the existing version of the game with all its DLC, while the latter is basically the equivalent of the PS4 and Xbox One versions with all the new graphical updates and content that entails.

Upgrading to this version [DX11] costs $19.99 (about £14) for those who already have all of the game's DLC (which this includes). Those without the DLC can upgrade for $29.99 (about £20).

Buying Scholar of the First Sin from scratch will be $49.99 (about £34) for the DirectX11 version and $39.99 (about £27) for the DirectX9 version.

The PC version came out 2 days ago. I bought it through the upgrade path. And it runs on max settings, 60fps. On a 4+ year old computer. I'm struggling to understand how/why it doesn't run the same on the XBone and PS4.
