To me, this began before the XBO even came out. From 2010 on, Microsoft focused too much on the Kinect and continuously cycled between Halo, Forza, and Gears. Meanwhile, Sony was more explorative. The PS3 had its sequels in Uncharted 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, Resistance 3, and Killzone 3, but it also received a bunch of new IPs. Some good examples were Journey, Puppeteer, Beyond: Two Souls, and The Last of Us. It also helped that the PS3 got support from 3rd party Japanese devs, so it had the Atelier, Disgaea, and Tales series along with Ni No Kuni.

As a result, it affected public perception of both brands going into this generation. Consumers expected the PS4 to receive a wide variety of games while they were iffy on the XBO (then, "Durango"). The DRM debacle and trainwreck of a reveal reinforced the consumers' skepticism as MS demonstrated its lack of focus on games. Many flocked to the PS4 which explains why a large chunk of the PS4 userbase is gamers that only had a 360 last gen. I think the ones that swtiched to Playstation play a wide variety of games while the ones who stayed on the Xbox tend to like shooters, racing games, and sports (most notably, Madden).

Alright, it looks like we a have a good clue to how much Microsoft has overshipped the Assassin's Creed bundle. Here's Abdiel's assessement:

"Our DCs have had a just absolute ton of those AC bundles since December, and we're finally bleeding them down to the last vestiges. And really, even that's become a crawl, because the Halo bundle has largely just replaced sales of the AC bundle, so there's no increase in speed of sales, at all."

so MS went and shipped more XB1's when there was still a shit ton of AC XB1's already in stores? 

Basically. MS must have thought that the momentum from last holiday season would carry over to this year, but the temporary price increase and lack of compelling software have slowed the XBO down.

There's The Shogun and Cornbread. The Shogun has commented more on software sales, though. Cornbread rarely gives his assessement, so Abdiel and The Shogun are your go-to guys.

Or, they realized without concrete sales figures, people would estimate how x1 was selling worldwide through shipment data, so they overshipped to make the console seem more competetive than it actually was.

they still shipped XB1's  with the new Halo bundle though. shipments wont be that low.
