Well, it's proving to be hard to the XBO to compete even in the USA in anything other than shooters, even with exclusive ads.

That's not looking good to the XBO at all.

It's kinda strange though. Both consoles have a similar install base in the US. Makes you wonder why XBO owners seem much less interested in genres outside of shooting and racing.

To me, this began before the XBO even came out. From 2010 on, Microsoft focused too much on the Kinect and continuously cycled between Halo, Forza, and Gears. Meanwhile, Sony was more explorative. The PS3 had its sequels in Uncharted 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, Resistance 3, and Killzone 3, but it also received a bunch of new IPs. Some good examples were Journey, Puppeteer, Beyond: Two Souls, and The Last of Us. It also helped that the PS3 got support from 3rd party Japanese devs, so it had the Atelier, Disgaea, and Tales series along with Ni No Kuni.

As a result, it affected public perception of both brands going into this generation. Consumers expected the PS4 to receive a wide variety of games while they were iffy on the XBO (then, "Durango"). The DRM debacle and trainwreck of a reveal reinforced the consumers' skepticism as MS demonstrated its lack of focus on games. Many flocked to the PS4 which explains why a large chunk of the PS4 userbase is gamers that only had a 360 last gen. I think the ones that swtiched to Playstation play a wide variety of games while the ones who stayed on the Xbox tend to like shooters, racing games, and sports (most notably, Madden).
