Forums - Nintendo - Online with the Wii: How does it work?

What the problem with Wii online?

Yes, if you don't have wireless you have to buy an adapter, which you can get for cheap (cheapest I can find is £3, then most expensive is £15) to plug the cable in.
After that it's very easy. Go to settings, add access point. The Wii will search for a connection you say that's the one you want and it's done.

For console friends, you add them to your friends list, they add you to theirs, done, your consoles are now friends. You can message them, send them Mii's, their Mii's can mingle in your Mii parade etc.

In the games, you add their games code to the friends list, they do the same to theirs, and you are friends.

It would make it a lot easier if they just had console codes and not a new one for each game, but it's not a huge thing, surely? You only have to add the friend once, after all.

The 360 doesn't do wireless out of the box, does it?  Don't you have to buy a wirless adapter, which isn't cheap?  Also, pay xx per month for xbox live subscription?

The worst part of the wii is that they have wifi instead of an ethernet port. Thats one way to cut out over 90% of wii owners from going online. And going online with wifi sucks i could never figure the shit out, the stupid guides never work.

thats actually the only reason i got my wii online, because of wifi

IMO, the worst thing about the 360 (besides the actual hardware) is that it doesn't have wifi like all the other systems do by default.  Keep in mind that wifi is a lot more useful and ethernet is less expensive to set-up.

Didn't do anything wrong, he has to add you. Nintendo is scared that people you don't know try to contact you. So you have to call him, email him or something before you can communicate with him through your wii

So I can't play people online until they add me back?

Correct.  This is possibly the mother of all non-problems; if you're about to start a game with someone and they haven't added you back yet, just have them add you and then start the game.

@DMeisterJ: Yes, it's sort of like having a separate gamertag for each game.  It would be nicer if the games could just use the friends listed in your Wii address book as your friends list, and I don't know why they didn't do it that way.  I don't know why you would want someone to be able to send you messages and Miis but not be able to send you online game invitations or vice-versa.

ok im using ATT dsl internet, and im going to buy a wii lan adapter, is dsl fast enough to play online

DSL works fine for me. I've had lag-free 32-player matches in Medal of Honor.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

My fucking wii will not go online. I have wireless internet and set it up properly and the connection test says its working but then it just doesn't fucking work at all. It is taking all of my self constraint not to run over and stomp my wii into a million fucking pieces.

The Wii code is 16 digits and is just for trading Miis and sending messages and sending photos from the photo channel. You find it by clicking on the message thing on the lower right corner of the main screen, then clicking on your address book to add friends. The first page is your own friend code. You must both add each other before you can trade Miis and photos and messages, so you can't get spam from strangers who see your code all over the internet.

The Brawl code is specific to Brawl. It is 12 digits and just for Brawling. To Brawl with a friend you must only exchange Brawl codes and NOT your main Wii codes. To find your Brawl code, you must connect to the Wi-Fi service within the game, and go to your friend list, and it will be on the top of the page. You must both add each other before you can Brawl. Until you have friends, you can rock with strangers.
