The Wii code is 16 digits and is just for trading Miis and sending messages and sending photos from the photo channel. You find it by clicking on the message thing on the lower right corner of the main screen, then clicking on your address book to add friends. The first page is your own friend code. You must both add each other before you can trade Miis and photos and messages, so you can't get spam from strangers who see your code all over the internet.
The Brawl code is specific to Brawl. It is 12 digits and just for Brawling. To Brawl with a friend you must only exchange Brawl codes and NOT your main Wii codes. To find your Brawl code, you must connect to the Wi-Fi service within the game, and go to your friend list, and it will be on the top of the page. You must both add each other before you can Brawl. Until you have friends, you can rock with strangers.
