Forums - Gaming - Why do some people seem to think that exclusives sell better?

Because your top list are games who are established cash cows in the eyes of the the publishers. But when it comes to new IP exclusivity makes more sense. or if a certain series isnt selling well enough on the other console that its better to cut cost for porting and get extra marketing and hype as being an exclsuive for the other system.

Exclusives have a twofold purpose. One is to make your platform stand out by making you able to boast that your platform is the only place to play X game. The other purpose is to cock-block your competitor from getting more content from their platform.

For instance:
The weakest selling PS4 AAA exclusive is ranked #38 according to VGChartz.

This is out of a possible 386. The lowest selling exclusive sells more than 90% of all other multiplatform games. The highest selling game is ranked #9, then it goes #13, #14, #19, #23, #28 and then #38.

You think exclusives don't sell better?
Okay. Why was The Order critically panned and hated on by everyone and their mother yet it has sold better than that previously mentioned 90% of games? Because it's exclusive. It would not have stood out whatsoever if it didn't get special attention, if it didn't have uber sex graphics thanks to optimization not seen on multi plats. This is but one example of many.

On the Xbox side, the worst performing AAA exclusive is ranked #22 out of a possible 257. Once again, all AAA exclusives ranked in the top 10%. Once again, the attention they received helped bolster this list to include new IP that otherwise could've very easily tanked. Then we look at the WiiU that basically only has exclusives. I promise you that Nintendos games have outsold the little multiplats they've received, I dont even need to look at that lol

Point is, it would be pretty easy to make a case that yes, exclusives do generally sell better because of what they are. This all assumes you're comparing sales of a multiplat game on one platform, to an exclusive game on that same platform ie (Drive club vs CoD PS4).

Exclusives are becoming more and more irrelevant. #dealwithit

Exclusives don't sell better. However they're useful to a manufacturer to give additional incentive for people to purchase their particular platform.

The only reason it can be more viable to do exclusive games as a 3rd party, are if your resources are limited. It can greatly help reduce development costs to target a single console. I think this is the only reason we really see this in Japan. Most of their target market is on a single format, and so the additional expense of other formats isn't necessarily covered by increased sales.

Well, in the case of Nintendo, exclusives sell better because that is what people get Nintendo consoles for.. Nintendo games.

Of course they wouldn't sell better though since multiplat = bigger userbase = more sales. However, this doesn't mean the exclusives don't sell good either..

they don't sell better, if they did exclusives wouldn't be basically dead right now. It makes more sense in Japan, with low budget games (sometimes), or if the audience is extremely tiny on other consoles. It doesn't take much to sales to make the port worth it.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

COD Ghosts sold more than Pokémon ORAS in 2014? Fucking hell...

Well known games should be multiplat to maximum sales potential.

New IP's and lesser known games make great exclusives. They usually sell more as exclusives because Microsoft or Sony will advertise for them, and make it known that they are exclusives generating hype. It's really the marketing that makes the difference.

For games that are established having more platforms to sell on helps, but when getting established sometimes being exclusive helps build publicity.
Infamous vs prototype. Both games were new at the time one was multiplatform one wasn't. While prototype had more at launch over time infamous outsold all the versions of prototype combined. Infamous 2 also outsold prototype 2s combined sales.
But games like final fantasy, wouldn't benefit. Games like tomb raider bayonetta and street fighter probably will sell less being exclusive/timed exclusive will sell less overall than had they been multiplatform from the start but often deals are made that allow the games to be made at all and the salesakes can't really be said to be lost when the game would have sold 0 without it.
