NX -> Next. Next what? All tell you Watt... It's "Next Revolution". Why? Because "Revolution" is the only codename for a past Nintendo console that fits. "Next Cafe", "Next Dolphin", "Next Family Computer" don't make allot of sense.
Or it could mean anything else really.

The Wii had gimmicks, so this will also have gimmicks. What gimmicks? All tell you Watt... Interactive Holographic display. **** will sell 1 billion.

Actually an holographic display wouldn't be too far fetched. There were some holographic 3D prototype phones at CES2015, and Nintendo just spent 100 million $ on some unknown tecnology. http://www.gonintendo.com/s/227800-nintendo-spends-100-million-on-mystery-acquisition

Supposedly, they were looking at free-form screens, not holo. Holo would be too expensive for nintendos historical strategy

Not really, the free form displays were another story. They've signed an agreement for Sharp to supply them, they haven't bought the tecnology.

On the other hand I agree holo seems expansive, but a parralax barrier screen was expansive too for the 3DS and yet... An holo screen would feel like the natural evolution of the 3DS screen, like next-gen 3D. I wouldn't rule it out completely.

It's definitely a nice concept, unfortunately it doesn't relaly tie in to anything they have at the moment

The previous and current generation of handhelds were advertised to deliever a "console experience" and launched with games that tried to mimic "console games" but found their success when they changed their philosophy and had games more suitable for their medium. There are many exceptions though.

I'm curious how the portable component of NX will be approached (if it had one because Iwata claims it's not a hybrid or whatever), and will their philosophy for handheldish games change with time? So whatever the device is, because it's all speculations at this point, how would Nintendo and third party approach their game design if they're making a top down Zelda, FE, a side scrolling Metroid when the same library has a 3D Mario and Zelda.

.- -... -.-. -..

I suspect it is a handheld, but I don't think Nintendo has ever had a development code name for any of their handhelds (although I do remember project Atlantis being the GB successor that I think they scrapped only parts of it later used for the GBA and rumors that the DS name was originally the place holder that stuck).

In either case, NX is a MUCH better name then they have come up with in years so if it winds up being the final name of a new console or handheld I am fine with that.

NX discussion thread exists for a reason.

Nintendo has stated that the NX is a brand-new concept designed for the purpose of creating new gameplay experiences.

They've also said that they needed (as a company) to focus on new ideas and different ways to game in order to continue brand growth over the next ten years.

It's very unlikely that the Nx "line" of consoles" (speculation) will have anything to do with specs or presentation or anything of the sort.

Iwata specifically stated that it's possible the amount of "form factors" may increase, a line of devices is far more likely than simply a tablet.

The Nx is a new console. That much is very set in stone.

They said that, 'should the strategy of implementation be successful', then perhaps Nintendo would go ahead with more hardware.

"NX, along with smart devices, PCs, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, will work together with a new membership service developed by Nintendo and DeNA. The new service will be one of “core elements” NX offers.

“Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses,” Mr. Iwata said."

Speculation that Nx is cross-buy anything is silly. There is nothing supporting those theories at all.

"it's described as a "dedicated game system", "

Additionally, Nintendo has been experimenting with free-form displays and released this interesting patent a while ago http://wiiudaily.com/2014/05/nintendo-patent-shows-device-with-interchangeable-controls/

Nintendo has spoken repeatedly (and vaguely) about the importance of their "hardware-software integrated platform business" in the past, but only recently did they start addressing the specific problems they seemed to be overlooking within that very paradigm: the fact that they have relatively self-contained ecosystems on, say, the Wii U and 3DS. In another investor Q&A—this one translated and published last month (via GameSpot)—Iwata said that in the future he wants handhelds and other gaming consoles to be "like brothers in a family of systems." Previously, Iwata explained, Nintendo had come up with "completely different architectures" for its different gaming systems, which leads to "divergent methods" for software development in turn.

Iwata added that the fraternal-like bonds will only truly be achievable in the next generation, saying: "While we are only going to be able to start this with the next system, it will become important for us to accurately take advantage of what we have done with the Wii U architecture."

Does this mean its curtains for the Wii U in the near future? Not exactly, but Iwata's comments did make it sound like Nintendo is already setting its sights somewhere above and beyond its current two systems. "It of course does not mean that we are going to use exactly the same architecture as Wii U," Iwata continued in his comment to investors, "but we are going to create a system that can absorb the Wii U architecture adequately."

"if you have a more unified development environment and you're able to make one game that runs on both systems instead of having to make a game for each system, that's an area of opportunity for us."

That's a recent statement from Miyamoto.
