Forums - Gaming - Ni-Oh: The game that laughs at The Last Gaurdian

So many of you here may have never heard of Ni-Oh, so to catch you up its a PS3 title in development by Team Ninja and being published by Koei Tecmo. It was first announced back in 2004 as Oni by Koei pre merger with Tecmo. It was to be released alongside a film of the same name based on an unfinished script by Akira Kurosawa and would be the directoral debut of his son Hisao Kurosawa.

It was then planned to be released in the summer of 06 with the new title Ni-Oh. Although this was the first release date to be announced for any PS3 game, it was slated several months after the PS3's planned release in spring 2006, suggesting it was not intended as a launch game. Leading up to the release we had a trailer at E3 2005 shown below

The release window came and went and not a word about the title was spoken, not until 2009. In 2009 Koei confirmed the game was still being developed and apologized for the lack of updates. 2010 rolled around and the newly merged Koei Tecmo announced that Tecmo's Team Ninja was to finish the development of the game after Koei had put it on hold.

Fast forward to 2012 and Koei Tecmo's president and CEO Yoichi Erikawa announced that the game had finished its alpha develpment cycle and that development of the game was continuing steadily. August 2014 was the next we heard of the game when a trademark for the game was filed in the US and then in November in an interview Hayashi confirmed the game was still in development and that it is starting to come together and feel good.

That is the last we heard of the game, 10 years after its initial announcement. However Japan still holds faith in the title with it showing up on the latest Famitsu most wanted list.

Or it could just be the trolls =P

So do you think this game will one day show up?? What platform do you believe its being developed for now?? Does this top The Last Gaurdian saga??

The game is probably either being made anew for PS4, or it was cancelled and Nintendo salvaged it as they did with Bayo 2, and with Devil's Third when THQ went down under. Both have quite a good chance of happening, more the latter, since the guy who leaked Devil's Third as coming to Wii U, also said that 3 more games were getting the same treatment, specially since the development had stopped as a whole when Koei and Tecmo merged, and if the game just finished it's alpha development cycle in 2012, then the game was probably started anew, when it came up again, and revived by who knows who and why.

COMG guide to points: 1 point = Raging. 2 points = Beasting. 3 points = Tearing it up. 4 points = Berzerk. 7 points = Rampage. 12 points = Burst. 15 points = god mode. 20+ points = DIVIDING BY ZERO!!! 40+ points = Youkai (originally Pokemon).

-1 = Negabeasting. -5= NegaRampage. -10 = NegaBurst

Didn't know this game is trapped development in hell...

There comes a point where people don't even care anymore. I didn't even know this game existed till now so I'm not sure it tops TLG in release date infamy. Maybe in the years to follow the game will be given more appreciation for its... lack of... being released. But as of now the only thing close to TLG to the general public is FF15 but that game will be coming out soon so TLG will be by itself again after that game releases

I think its being ported to the PS4, I believe in Tecmo Koei. They've been supporting the PS4 well. I hope this TGS.

Ni-Oh afaik never got a release window back then, so I think the project has been completely stopped early on and for several years, but it's curious they seem to have reawakened it 1-2 years ago, by far most of the stopped projects just never see the light of day (most of those are never announced though).
The original trailer seems to point at a Musou or Kessen like game, which W-Force is known to develop really efficiently, so we probably will see something soon if they really decided to make a game from the concept.

In contrast TLG did get a very rough release window indicating they initially got pretty far into development, maybe even as far as beta, but unsolvable quality and/or technical issues made Sony pretty much hit the reset button on that - maybe even more than once when they realized they should move it to either PS4 or even Morpheus - but it seems it was always in "active development" in some form (team size probably fluctuated a lot) during all that time.

As far as I know, this game is still under development.

Game has been shelved several times for multiple years. I'm glad they go back to it, because there aren't many action games these days that aren't hunting games. Will pay attention to when/if they bother to show more.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Don't forget Fith Phantom Saga by SEGA and Killing Day by Ubisoft both were announced for Ps3 years ago.

The funny thing is that Ni-Oh is still more likely to come out than TLG!
