Ah I understand your point now, yeah more options is always good, especially if it means the game can appeal to a wider audience and it doesn't take anything away from the core fanbase.

Not buying a game because it's not your flavor isn't "boycotting". It's just not buying the game. I'm probably never gonna buy another Madden. I'm not "boycotting" Madden though. I just have no interest in it. Boycotting has a purpose.
Or, is your purpose "not appealing to a wider audience"? If so....dumb reason to boycott something. "I'm not going to buy this game, that I could possibly fully enjoy.....because there are many others who wouldn't like it".
Either way you slice it, you're looking at this in the completely wrong way.

In this case I fear making the game appeal to a wider audience is actually taking something away from the core fanbase. They won't feel like special snowflakes anymore.

Some of you complaining about it being too hard must be too young to remember gen 3 and 4. Game over? Ok beat the whole game again enjoy!

reggin_bolas said: You know what, I'm not letting this one go. It's beyond absurd. The designers could easily "keep" their original vision by adding a difficulty option. How? Just call it something degrading like "ultra pussy mode." That's fine, I would own that since I was never good enough for some games like Ninja Gaiden. I concede to you guys' superior skillz. There, problem solved. You retain the original intent which is to convey a sense of smugness and contempt for the gaming masses. |
You realize that the Souls series is popular due to its difficulty? It's fun because you have to find strategic ways to "outsmart" the game, instead of just running through and mowing everything down while smashing the X button.
But hey, I guess Contra and Battletoads were "smug" games as well, since they were really hard and didn't have the option to change the difficulty (even though those games are classics and amongst the most remembered games due in part to how hard they were)

Maybe we do remember and are happy that most developers don't feel the need anymore to build arbitrary barriers.

Only that D* Souls games, and I suppose Bloodborne as well, aren't "punishingly brutal". Not generally speaking at least. Only Demon's Souls on level 1-1 has been, basically because one couldn't level up. Yes, they may be hard, especially for new entries. They have a long learning curve. But while I took 9 hours to beat 1-1 in Demon's Souls, I could go reach the first boss in DS2 without even dying in a fight. Just by some lame mistakes.
Still, they are RPGs. The easy mode somehow is there. Just grind to level up and upgrade your gear. Or if you want to make them really trivial play online and summon like mad.
As for the "self-conceit and elitism".. Please. The games are praised and loved simply because they have the best fighting system for action RPGs out there. Well, not to mention that the setting is lovely. If people would rather slice air or waste hours chatting in that retarded 1st person view in Skyirm and the likes, their loss.

I.am actually too old to remeber those gens, as my hobbies back than were much different and I took up gaming in my older years in gen7, when the games started catering more to my interests.
I know I would hate to play games like that, I find no enjoyment in constant failure.
I still hope an easy option will come down the line in a patch, once all fans have had their fun, so that my easy walkthrough doesn't impact their enjoyment.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. That's like criticizing Macbeth because it wasn't written for children.

Exactly, most RPGS can be brutal if you don't level appropriately (as I was remind playing through Final Fantasy tactics again, damn Weigraf battle) some just take less time to reach that point where it is easy.
