Forums - Nintendo - Nvidia's Shield Console -- A Hint At Nintendo's Fusion Future?

When the Chromecast is going for $30-50 and nobody cares about 4k yet, who exactly is the demographic for this device?

It wouldn't really need a ton of third party support, because the beauty is all of Nintendo's developer support in a Fusion setup is concentrated on one platform. So they could supply all the games themselves if they had to.

But I think if mobile chips are getting this powerful and available in a consumer format already today ... it does create an interesting issue for Japanese 3rd parties at least .... I think if Square-Enix for example could make a Nintendo Fusion/4DS version of Final Fantasy XV ... they probably would and it would probably outsell the PS4 version in Japan.

The question is can such a level of tech be delivered in a handheld? I'm starting to lean towards yes. No doubt it would have to be at a scaled down resolution (960x540 resolution for portable play?) and maybe some effects scaled back, but if Nintendo can get a 500 GFLOP-ish chip in a portable form factor ... *whistles* things start to get very, very interesting.

Hmm... So you guys are saying Nvidia is getting close to offering us a PS4-level performance in a handheld? That would be something.

To tell the truth, if Nvidia released such a handheld with a 1080p screen and that would support games on Steam... I'd pick it up without hesitation and ditch both Vita and 3DS.

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

Maybe, i see a hybrid future. Handhled with tv gaming capability and 3rd party releases.

To be honest even if the graphics weren't *quite* on par with the PS4 ... I'd personally buy a Fusion version just because I'd be able to play the same game at home or on the go if I really wanted to. That would be quite hard to resist. They'd absolutely dominate Japan too if they went that way.

Maybe they won't, or maybe ... y'know I've said before with low cost tablets and cheapo games eating away the budget/casual gamer demo, maybe the better play here is to go upmarket.

There's no PSP/Vita or Microsoft handheld likely to worry about in the future, so Nintendo can contrast themselves to the iPads/cheap Android tablets by offering much meatier gaming experiences that can be shared for home play on a whim too. That proposition at least makes some sense and differniates them in the portable space.

Issue with that is, streaming console games to tablets or phones eliminates much of the sales potential for them.

Also it would take a massive investment on software to give it a chance at market success, but the risk could really hurt them if the hardware pulls a wiiu.

It woudn't be streaming, take the streaming stuff of the Nvidia product out, I'm just talking about mobile tech. I'm talking about the handheld itself being able to run ports of even PS4 games (scaled down) if a developer really wanted to do it.

A Nintendo handheld with ...

ALL Nintendo games (Mario Galaxy 3, 3D Zelda, 3D Metroid, etc.) + some big gun Japanese IP like Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Quest XI, Kingdom Hearts 3, Resident Evil 7, Monster Hunter 5 (exclusive) and maybe even some Western PS4 ports like Call of Duty ...

Would be interesting.

I get that but convince why should any one buy that if they can game PS games on their tablets/phones and actuall moible games ?  wiiu could run a lot of games, but well you know how it is.

So why will it change for the next nintendo hardware, why will non nintendo fans buy this ?

Because a lot of people will buy the successor to the 3DS no matter what. Even if Nintendo's standing in the portable space has declined, they're still likely good for 50 million portables alone. Throw in 10-15 million for the home variant.

That's 65 million systems that could theoretically run even PS4 ports for play in the portable space.

With ALL of Nintendo's developer backing behind one platform ... not split between Wii U/3DS like it is today (so not nearly as many release droughts and more game diversity).

Put that all together and I think you would see even a fair bit of third party support, perhaps the most Nintendo has gotten since the SNES days honestly. 60+ million systems is nothing to sneeze at, especially Japanese devs would likely support it like crazy.

It's a much better scenario for third parties regarding Nintendo than what exists today -- either you make a game for the Wii U, currently sitting at a crappy 10 million install base, growing painfully slowly, and really can't match up with the PS4/X1, or the 3DS which is much better at 50 million but can only run PS2-level graphics, so you can't really port anything from your portfolio that isn't like 15 years old, and that doesn't have much appeal to many devs either.

You can, as a private person, buy ONE, not millions like nintendo would buy, smartphone for $250 with the following specs:

  • Quad core
  • 1920x1280, 5'' screen
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 32 GB ROM
  • 13.1 MP Camera
  • 2000mA battery

In a year or so when the Nintendo Fusion releases this tech will be old and cheap.
