Forums - General - Why is soccer so unpopular in the US?

^ that is so true.

Not quite.

In soccer, hockey and such, there are no scoring variables. If you make the craziest, most insane shot, or win in a tie breaker, it's still 1 point, regardless.

In Basketball and Football, that's not the case.

In football, you can say its really 2-1, but you are very wrong. Touchdowns are only one of the many variations of scoring in football:

1pt - Point After Touchdown. After a touchdown is made, the placekicker, or quarterback can kick for an additional point.

2pt - Two Point Conversion. In order to gain an edge (or make up for various failures along the way), a team, after successfully getting a touchdown, may attempt to score another touchdown from the 5 yard line.

3pt - Field Goal. Similar to rugby, if a team cannot manage a touchdown in 3 succuessive plays not gaining 10 total yards, you may use the placekicker or quarterback to kick the ball into the Field Goal. If succuessful, from any distance, nets you 3 points.

6pt - Touchdown. A team succuessfully has an active player in the endzone with the ball, without being tackled (to blow the play dead).

So your very, very wrong. There are 4 types of scores in football (with about 500 variations on how to actually score any given type), and atleast 3 kinds in basketball.

Such as:

1pt - Freethrow. A freethrow is an un-inhibited (by other players) chance to score up to 2 points due to a foul being committed against you.

2pt - "Goal" - this is where the ball, from inside the shot arc, is placed into the basket. The ball can be slam dunked, from the field, or any other means inside the paint. Also, "goal tending" the act of intentionally inhibiting another team from scoring a given goal, also is another way of scoring 2 points.

3pt - 3 Point Throw. A 3 point throw is when a player succuessfully lands a goal inside the basket from outside of the shot arc (which I think is 5 meters?).

And again, in soccer there is only 1 goal. 1 point no matter how, what, or whom you use. Basketball and Football are not this way. Learn before you comment. The American point system is based on the individual, and team effort placed into scoring, whereas soccer does not. If a player, or play is very good, skilled, smart, or anything else, will tend to score higher-value points than the other team. Go watch a game of Football where one team only kicks field goals: they rarely win. If a basketball team can play outside the perimiter, and shoot lots of 3 pointers, they tend to win alot (look at the OSU-Florida National Championship game. OSU totally failed at converting their 3pt shots, and lost very easily to a team that could)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

b/c we americans think we have to be macho and play our version of football...+ this does not help matters

however if we did play it would be like this

i am just kidding i like soccer, cant lay to save my life but i like it none the less

I have my own theory on why Americans don't like soccer: its too much of a team game. Don't get me wrong, football, basketball, and baseball are all team games and teamwork often trumps individual talent, but soccer is like the ultimate team game. As good as David Beckham is, he's not going dominate the other team and score seven goals almost all by himself like you might see in a football (american), or basketball game.

Pretty sure there's a ton of teamwork needed in basketball and american football, just as much as a soccer game anyway.

What makes you say American football doesn't require as much teamwork? Because some dude could just take the ball and run to a touchdown all by himself? As opposed to soccer where a dude could just take the ball and score a goal all by himself?

PS I pretty much hate all sports, though hockey is fun to watch.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

^nah....nothing personal but in american football your only as good as each man on the team--sure you might have a receiver score a few touchdown but only b/c he had a solid blocking line and a great qb

now basket ball is a bit differnt

I think no one mentioned women's football so far (as if it never happened):

The US women soccer national team was FIFA Women's World Cup Champion twice, in 1991 and 1999:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Women's_World_Cup

In the 90s the US women's national team was the world's top team - only Germany, Norway and Sweden could keep up with them in one year or another.

The top teams in recent history of Women's football (last 17 years) are in order of success/rank at World Chamionships Germany, USA, Norway, Brazil, Sweden, China & Canada.

In Europe Sweden & Norway are very close to Germany (sometimes superior), other countries like the south European countries, France and England/rest of UK still have to catch up.

If we only look at the Americas (North & South), USA was unrivaled for more than 15 years until Brazil became vice world champion last year.

Brazil caught up very quickly (no surprise to anyone who's familiar with male football). From what I saw last year I think Brazil will be the world's dominating country in women's football in the future.

BTW: The men's football World Cup hosted by USA in 1994 still holds the record for the highest attendance in World Cup history (attendance 3.6 million, average attendance 69,000).

Actually, soccer as a social activity is very popular.
Not when you watch it though, it's boring then.

The main 1's are basketball, football, and baseball....... Although SOME people do like lacrosse and hockey. And NASCAR, and horse racing.... There's just alot of sports here.
