I would put my money on Master Chief mainly because he is being put in a lot of other media. The Halo universe spans not only games but books, comics, short films and an upcoming TV series by Steven Spielberg. Halo is going to get more attention and with it, Master Chief. Although of course maybe only Halo-fans will watch the series, but it could grow a wider audience. It's Spielberg after all.
