Forums - Gaming - The PS4 Is Right on The Front Cover of Book Celebrating Sony’s Innovative Design

What’s the most representative product of Sony’s excellence in industrial design? The Walkman? Maybe a Sony Bravia TV? Nope. At least according to the authors of Sony Design: Making Modern, it’s the PS4.

The console ended up right on the cover of the upcoming book celebrating nearly 60 years of design by the Tokyo-based company by Deyan Sudjic, Chip Kidd and Ian Luna.

We aren’t even talking about your average Joes. Deyan Sudjic is the Director of the Design Museum in London. Ian Luna is a popular New York-based architecture writer, while Chip Kidd is a well known designer.

The book will be released by Rizzoli International on April 14th in the UK and April 28th in the US.

An impressive book dedicated to the innovative designs of Sony, a trailblazer in personal electronics and pioneer of the legendary and highly successful WALKMAN®, Handycam®, and other portable electronics. Emerging from the ashes of the Second World War, Sony Corporation pioneered the miniaturization of electronics and created some of the most innovative technologies of the postwar period. Following the model of one of its founders, Masaru Ibuka established Sony with the goal of doing what had never been done before.

Beginning with the TR-63 from 1957, the world’s first truly pocket-sized transistor radio, Sony launched the consumer microelectronics industry and gave rise to some of the most memorable products that transformed the way billions of people consume media. Notable for their ease of use, Sony’s products embody the utility of good design and have themselves become objects of desire.

This book beautifully catalogs their vast achievements in design and impact on global culture for almost seventy years. In-depth case studies from Sony’s archives on the development of the WALKMAN, the Handycam, the flat-screen TV, and the PlayStation make this the definitive history of Sony design. Through Sony’s relentless pursuit of innovation, this book is a tribute to the passion that continues to live on in their products today. With a stunning cover and interior design inspired by some of the most memorable Sony products, this book is a must-have for design and technology enthusiasts.

You can see the cover below, showing off the PS4’s recognizable profile, and if you’re interested, you can find the book on Amazon or Amazon UK.

Considering that the PS4 is quickly becoming the poster boy (or girl?) of the whole Sony business, it’s not that surprising that even its design is considered a good example of the style of the company as a whole.

The PS5 Exists.

If they mean visual design, I think I might actually agree on that. The PS4 is a very sleek and cool looking product.

The cell power.... Ops.

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

If Sony is serious about the new buisness model going forward, then PS4 may just be the product that changes the way people use home computing. With PlayStation Vue as the biggest trojan horse ever, they can get PS4 in twice the amout of households of any PlayStation before it.

PlayStation 4 could kick of the smart box era, and it would have Sony at the front of the market, and put them in the position Apple and Google have found themselves in the smartphone space. Then with the massive developer support they would obtain from having a box with a 300M userbase, they could swoop into the smartphone market with a PlayStation Phone and capture a good strong foothold there as well.

Sony could very easily change the landscape of computing, if they truly put everything behind PlayStation. With no more reason to support PC/Windows, and their ties to Smartphones/Android on the wobble, the time to turn PlayStation into their own all in one Computing/Games/Movies/Live TV/Music/Communications Platform is now.

Stop hate, let others live the life they were given. Everyone has their problems, and no one should have to feel ashamed for the way they were born. Be proud of who you are, encourage others to be proud of themselves. Learn, research, absorb everything around you. Nothing is meaningless, a purpose is placed on everything no matter how you perceive it. Discover how to love, and share that love with everything that you encounter. Help make existence a beautiful thing.

Sounds good. but the problem as always with Sony isn't a lack of great ideas or potential, it's rather an abundance of poor execution. With everything Sony related, they seem to almost go out of their way to find a way to mess it up and make things harder for themselves.

You can't really say this about most companies, but you can definitely say it off Sony; Sony is Sony's own worst enemy. They never get beaten, yet they seem to find a way to lose.

Good choice. The PS4's design is absolutely stunning.

The ps4 is one of the best looking devices i ever bought espacially the white one, and it cost 400 bucks only. Thats the real magic behind good design, making it also reasonible priced

The PS4 is great because it caters to every audience possible: Developer and consumer. When you achieve that, you're unstoppable.

Exactly.  Sony comes up with an endless stream of amazing ideas.  Actually I would say that is a fact.  However their products almost always fail to meet even half of  their potential.  Examples:

-Smartwatch: They had the first one that did everything even most of the newest ones do.  It even had decent app support!  However their was ZERO marketing and they failed to support it longterm.  Even their newest Smartwatch 3 has been called "The only good smartwatch" by several review sites and yet they don't market the damn thing at all!

-PS Home:  Should have been amazing from the start but took nearly 5 damn years to even come close to its original concept.  It never even really reached its full potential as an MMO The Sims competitor.

-Xperia Z1-3:  The entire Z line (Especially the compact editions) have gotten constant praise from customers and reviewers.  They come with multi-day battery life, water proof capabilites, sleek designs, great UI's, and Flagship performance!  Yet again, no marketing and until the Z3 it was hard as hell to get ahold of one in the US!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

I think the best part of this design was the first teaser picture (black rectangle), if i remember correctly they showed it again live and then showed the other camera angle, and i was like "this design was definitely worth the hype"

Also playstation is most likely their central product, and the one of the only directly targeted at future sony consumers (aka children).

I might want to buy this book.
