Different games for differing reasons, mainly to unwind and enjoy the experience.

I honestly don't know since I both enjoy playing games with a heavy focus on story as well as those that have little to no emphasis on their story at all. I guess I just play them to enjoy myself and to get away from the stresses in life, whether it's by enjoying a great story or getting deep into a combat system. I just want to have fun.

This. Even the best storylines in a video game can't even compare to a fairly good movie, so if you're not paying for the gameplay, then there's little to no reason to be playing.
Haha, my reason would be a multiple of these answers. : ) I play games because they're fun. Playing thru games like Mario, Zelda, and Smash are just really enjoyable to run around and soak in the world, especially when you play with friends, (or just fight in Smash!). It's good times to laugh, yell, and just have a good time. Then there's also the story, music, and characters like in RPGs. Good RPGs like Grandia, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, and Chrono Trigger allow you to explore a vast world, get lost in the music, and grow to love and enjoy the company of the characters you spend all your time with. And then there are games that challenge you, like puzzle games such as Tetris, Puyo Puyo, and a personal favorite, Tetris Attack, where you try to break your opponent and make some great, satisfying combos.
All in all, it's a good way to have fun, relax, and just take a break : )

To experience the story within the game mostly and to fall in love with the characters of the game and press buttons in quick succession while I'm in the middle of an important cutscene. It's like reading a book or watching a movie, the only difference is that you are an active party, you are pressing buttons, you are holding the controller, you feel the story. It's magical.

it can be either of one. Some games have such a good story it can overshadow the gameplay or whats left of it, games like Shadow of Memories. Same goes for the rest
- love playing it because its fun (whether its solo or with family & friends)
- escapes reality
- suppresses my life issues and depression (whenever i have any)
I play to immerse myself in different worlds, different from my own (hence my general disdain for games set in modern times, like GTAV)
I like being told well written stories and getting to know the different characters and maybe affect the world with my choices when possible. I also love heavy gameplay games, don't get me wrong. Rachet and Clank and Jak and Daxter are some of my favorite franchises, I'm also a big fan of tekken as my main fighting game which is essentially all gameplay (obviously cause it's a fighting)
Mainly though, I just wanna get away from it all for a few hours at a time. I don't judge (often) what others like, I'm just glad they found something they enjoy as much as what I enjoy.
