I love my Vita and I can assure you that "it has no games" can't be the reason.

I`m not one of them to say it has no games, but in the beginning a fair number of people would say this, and the software line up did seem a bit lacking, but that is clearly not the case anymore. I just had that reason for any who still believes that, despite it not being true.

i dont really follow handheld games much so i dont know how many games the 3DS has versus the Vita but i do know that a lot of Vita games (the vast majority) are niche japanese games, (games that i like a lot) and the problem with this games is that they basically dont exist for the casual crowd and even some gamers, because they are not advertised and they are never going to be as popular as something like Pokemon.

take for example Makai Trillion:

A really awesome looking SRPG being developed exclusively for the VITA and one of my most anticipated games this year, and i bet not even you knew about it XD...

Yeah, you got me. I never heard of this game, and I usually hear about a lot of different Vita games coming. The Vita does have a lot of cool games I would like to play, many of them RPGs and cool anime games, but yeah, they are quite niche and will likely only find some success in Japan. I don`t think these games will  help move the Vita outside of Japan. I`m under the impression that Japanese games like these are still quite niche and the Japan/anime base is a small base. I don`t know how these games are viewed in different regions, whether people think of them as `weeaboo` or whatever terms people use, or people in general are cool with them.

At least Japan is supporting the system well. I want some of those Vita games... >: )

I'm just going to copy and paste my comment from the other Vita thread:

"First, let's look at when the PS Vita released and the circumstances surrounding it. Sony's biggest competitor, Nintendo, was struggling mightily with the 3DS. As a matter of fact, during the first few months of the 3DS's life, multiple publications (most notably IGN, and their now notorious "why the 3DS failed and the Vita is set to succeed" article) had proclaimed the PS Vita as the first handheld to overthrow Nintendo. Sony had everyone's attention, the press was theirs, people were not buying the, at the time, overpriced 3DS, and they had massive momentum from the major late life success of the PS3 (something the Wii sorely lacked). In my opinion, all Sony had to do was to price the system right, include a few great launch titles, and keep a steady stream of titles going. In a perfect world for Sony, they did that and now have marketshare close o that of the 3DS. But this isn't Sony's perfect world. It was Nintendo who did all of that, while Sony made the original launch price of the 3DS look like peanuts compared to that of the Vita and it's horrid memory cards.

Simply put, it wasn't about who they targeted, they simply failed to take advantage of any of the opportunities afforded to it. Launching a system at $250, and that without an essential memory card - which would raise costs to as much as $350 without even a game, cost them dearly. They never really recovered from that, and unlike Nintendo, didn't have the Pokemon's and Mario's to fall back on.

It's funny to think, Sony had an advantage no other company had before, Nintendo was, for the first time, actually struggling with their handheld, the market was wide open and Sony blew it. All they had to do was launch the Vita at $170 with a game and memory card included, and we would see a much more competitive market today. Instead, they chose to do what Sony does best: overprice the crap out of everything. And as we all know, Nintendo did what Sony didn't, and the sales speak or themselves.

PS: to anyone even thinking about suggesting a phone/Vita hybrid, they already tried that and failed.... miserably. It didn't work then, and it sure as heck won't work now."

To add to my previous comment, the price was just insane. You have $400, what would you buy?
a) PS3 + 3DS/Xbox 360
b) 3DS + many games
c) PS4/Xbox One/Wii U
d) PS Vita + memory card
e) A nice Smartphone (iPhone/Galaxy S/Note)

I don't see many people, if anyone picking the Vita in that situation. It was mostly the price, which lead to a small install base, which lead to less and less games, which lead to less sales, and the cycle continued.

Shoot, someone did a similar thread to this already. Wow, I feel bad bringing this up again.

I do agree it was too overpriced. There was a time when it was on sale with a game for 200 USDs. I almost bit, but couldn`t justify the price. If they launched it at 200 at the start, they would have had a better chance I think. 170 for the power it offered I don`t think was going to be possible for Sony, unless they didn`t mind selling it at a loss to gain momentum. At that price, I would have strongly considered getting it though.

Oh, no, don't worry, the thread was just slightly similar and I thought my comment from it fit well in here. That thread was about the audience the Vita targeted, and to be honest, it was kind of a troll thread, so your thread is perfectly fine.

The reason I used $170 was because that was the price that got the 3DS moving. Nintendo ate some losses on it to move the system, so Sony should have as well. They could have made the money back through game licenses and PSN subscriptions. Much like yourself, I too would have given serious consideration to a Vita (with an OELD screen, not without lol) at that price. :)

Oh, well, that`s good to know, and  thanks for the well thought out comment. I was just really curious about the Vita`s shortcomings.

So the Vita launched for $250, same as 3ds. Why on earth was the 3DS so expensive if its so much weaker? I hope they abandon the useless 3d if it really costs that much.

They did. It's called the 2DS, and they aimed it at younger childern, who would otherwise break the hinge off the normal 3DS, and wouldn't be able to use 3D anyways. It did take them a while to release it though. But it's Nintendo, they're always trying wacky stuff. Sometimes they fail (VirtuaBoy, Wii U) and sometimes they score big (Wii, DS, Gameboy, 3DS). It's why we love them. Keeps things from feeling monotonus.

Well, they did drop the price shortly after and gave free games for those who bought it at launch, so Ninten made some steps to fix the price issue. Sony stood by their price for a long time, which I think hurt them in the end.
