It set up COD as one of, if not the, biggest gaming franchises, it's influence is still seen today in both COD and most other FPS games. Uncharted 2, I think 3 was better and the original started the series. But this is where it really took off, cemented Naughty Dog's position as one of the most highly rated developers as well. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, western console RPGs wouldn't be the same without it! Final Fantasy XIII, the same as the above. Only, this time the influence was negative. FF is the series that made JRPGs popular in the first place, XIII was massively hyped up and did look pretty impressive in previews. It wasn't a bad game, but it wasn't particularly good either. Maybe if it had lived up to the hype then JRPGs would still be a big genre now rather than the current niche that they are. |
Too many lists here that focus on one console, thankfully yours does not. I like your first 3, but I would change the next two only because I don't know enough about true RPGs (Zelda is the closest I get)... My next two would be Gears of War (where the generation took of in Graphics fidelity, plus a great game, 3rd person, competed with COD for the [professional] competitive online community). Skyward Sword for spot 5, showed that motion controls could matter in a full game rather than just a party game.
A lot of great games though. Mario Galaxy (reversing gravity in a platformer, etc., was a great game), Last of Us (great story telling, graphic fidelity, emotional, fun to play), Left 4 Dead (really great take on being able to play both sides of the zombie vs. humans fight)... there are many more, just tired of typing.
-lost planet
-resident evil 5
-the last remnant
-tekken tag 2/revolution

Mine according to what you said before your list would be 1. TLoU: cinematic storytelling an a game that will forever be remembered as THE 7th gen gem (not my favorite but 200+ GOTY awards says so) 2. Uncharted 2: even though 3 was better this was more impactful 3. Heavy Rain: Proved that cinematic QTE games like Telltale's could work though it had way more story impact for your choices 4. Skyrim: The definitive WRPG for the gen 5. LBP: Proved user created content could fuel a game for years on consoles in an entirely new way. Project spark, minecraft, terrerria...you're welcome |
Last gen =/= Sony.

1. Dark Souls
2. Uncharted 2
3. Call of Duty Black Ops
4. Tekken Tag Tournament 2
4. GTA V
Street fighter has to be in the top 5 because it essentially rebirthed the fighting genre alone.

My top five:
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Set the basis for modern shooters and redefined MP games. It was also one of the most important reasons for X360 success in NA.
FIFA 08: The first versions of Fifa on PS3/X360 were shocking. It was incredible to see how much football evolved from the PS2 days.
The Elder Scrolls IV: The first game to justify the acquisition of a new generation console back in 2006.
Wii Sports: It was really a big change in the way games could be played.
Demon Souls: It's weird that the multiplayer concepts of this game are not highlighted. Mixing SP and MP into one single thing is what most developers try to do now without much success.

yeah I had a Wii and played all the big 360 titles at a friend's but none of those really stick with ya like these. I could never bring myself to replay many games other than Smash Bros. which was awesome but I think beat out by these. If I can't get interested enough to replay I can't rightly put it on my top influential list it just seems wrong.
It's a pity someone started a thread to talk about something different from the usual and most people changed the topic to "post your personal top 5 games of last gen"
