Are they really all that diverse? At least when it comes to high-profile releases? In terms of gameplay, certainly, but they've all been moving some sort of design singularity in terms of aesthetic, aside from niche JRPGs.

What do you mean?  Other than obvious groupings like CoD and Battlefield, which is to be expected because they're in the same exact genre.  Glancing at the Amazon hourly best sellers, just as an example, the top third-party games are The Wolf Among Us, GTA5, Shadow of Morder, Monster Hunter 4, Dying Light, CoD: Advanced Warfare, Minecraft, Evolve, Diablo, and Dragon Age Inquistition.

None of those games would you mistake for another.  If you mean theme, like Fantasy or Science Fiction, then there isn't much getting around that.

9 out of 10 games dont get released on Nintendo platforms. If that is fine with you, fine.

9 out 10 games underperform when released (downgrade, day one patch, microtransitons, etc...). If that is fine with you...

There is a pool of excuses to choose from, if that is the best you got i hope it satisfied your needs. In the meantime, i will be playing DA:Inquisition, Shadow of Mordor, Wolfenstein New Order, GTA V, Tales of Borderlands, Life is Strange, Apotheon, Rogue Legacy, COD:AW,  Diablo 3, Grim Fandango, Walking Dead, soon Witcher 3, Batman Arkhan Knight, among other games that are NOT available on Nintendo platforms. I could go on but i think that you got my point.

BTW, the games i just named are just a few installed right now on my Ps4, i have way more.

I don't care for many third party games because they are poor quality (Dragon Age) being one of them. They also are not that interesting with games like COD,Battlefield and the overrated GTA.However, third parties did not abuse Nintendo at all.Nintendo is the one that never pushed third party as only Nintendo games sold on Nintendo's consoles even back int he day.Third party never got big until the PlayStation arrived.Games like MGS,Batman,The Witcher and any other quality third party game are must buys though and I prefer Red dead over GTA.

Well, your preference on games is undebatable because its your opinion. But i can assure you that if one day Red Dead Redemption 2 is announced, you can bet your house that it wont be coming to Wii U.

Absolutely not. you can check the data.

Did you actually grow up during the NES or SNES eras? This is just laughably false.

Megaman, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Double Dragon, Ninja Turtles, Castlevania, Blade of Steel, River City Ransom, Bubble Bobble, Duck Tales, Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl, Contra/Super C were all hit games on the NES, many of these franchises were born/popularized on the NES.

Street Fighter II was the *THE* game to own on a SNES, that was the game (not Mario World or Zelda III) that caused SNES sales to really start to rev up to Nintendo's standards, prior to that Yamauchi felt the system was selling a bit sluggishly. The SNES also had countless fantastic third party titles. Final Fantasy III (VI), Top Gear, NBA Live, NHL, Contra III, Megaman X, Chrono Trigger, Mortal Kombat 2, Ogre Battle, Earthworm Jim, Secret of Mana, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Star Wars/ESB/ROTJ, etc.

The NES/SNES were the Playstation 4 of their day. In fact Sony really hasn't done anything but taken the same formula Nintendo cemented with the NES, but they took all their third party support and marketed to teenagers/college aged folkes rather than kids.

Nintendo somehow has turned themselves into the Sega Master System of the modern day ... a niche thing with a handful of terrific 1st party games each year but not much else.

This thread immediately got off-track.

Let me talk about the OP. First of all, you discuss exclusives and third-party games as though they are separate things by necessity ("I am just poisoned against third-parties ... but I can't imagine my self playing all that many non-exclusive games."). On Microsoft platforms in particular, many of the exclusives ARE made by third-party studios. Dead Rising 3, Crimson Dragon, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, the upcoming Tomb Raider, etc. I know some of these are published by MS, technically making them "first-party" projects, and that some are available on PC, technically making them not Xbox exclusives, but you get the gist of it. Sony has a similar situation with Bloodborne, Deep Down, Street Fighter V, and generally a lot of Japanese or indie games.

I bring this up because if you like Bloodborne or Street Fighter V (etc), you might want to consider trying multiplatform games made by the same developers (Dark Souls, Street Fighter IV Ultra, etc). There's no reason to rule those games out simply because they're multiplatform.

To answer your question more directly, yes there are a lot of multiplatform games available on XBO and PS4 (and sometimes PC) that are not available on Nintendo platforms that are worth playing. Which games these are depend on your tastes. Your perception of third-party games seems to be jaded by their lackluster support of Nintendo platforms, and I don't blame you because they have a habit of supporting Nintendo platforms very well with bad games.

How does a gamer not want to try as many interesting games as possible, purely because of the 1st / 3rd party distinction? I'm all about most Sony exclusives, but last year multiplats ruled the roost. If you do get PS4 or XB1, please at least try some of the higher rated indie digital games.

I actually enjoy quite a number of indie games; I've actually generally found them far superior to my experiences with the 'retail' form of third party.

Also someone mentioned about Microsoft published games that aren't first-party; to be honest I have things like Bayonetta but I tend to view them as another class because they're published by a first-party... HOWEVER I should probably cut third parties a bit more slack since the original Bayonetta was one.

I was thinking about it, and I don't know that I'd buy many non-Sony exclusives if I pick a PS4 or many non-Microsoft exclusives if I change my mind and go the other route. Perhaps I am just poisoned against third-parties by their abuse of Nintendo consumers, but bar for some oddities, like a good Final Fantasy or Sonic game, I can't imagine my self playing all that many non-exclusive games. Dragon Age 4 would be one of the few exceptions (which I'd get on PC).

Am I just a Nintendo gamer who will be carrying over defensive habits to their secondary console or are third-party offerings just that 'take it or leave it' to anyone else?

I'm sorry but I think this is one of the cases where you shouldn't buy into the nonsense that people throw in your face. There are plenty of incredible third party games, if you're choosing to bypass them because of some mantra drilled into your head on message boards, you're missing out.

In the day when Nintendo had good third party support, like the NES and SNES, many of the best games were third party.

Even today, even though people crap on the Wii U versions of games, if you didn't have a PS3/360 and didn't sit there counting pixels or measuring frame rate between versions ... things like Assassin's Creed IV and COD: BLOPS2 and Batman Arkham and Need For Speed and Rayman are perfectly enjoyable games on the Wii U. Hell some of them use the tablet controller better than Nintendo's own games.

The whole bickering about them is they don't have every little minor feature that maybe another version or has a frame rate hiccup now and again or isn't released and day and date with the other versions is just fan boy posturing.

Have fun on console message boards, but don't take them too seriously, especially with the games you buy. There's a lot of stupidity and childish console politics (ie: how dare company X/Y/Z release this port 3 months late! Grrr ... now its unplayable to me!). Research games you think are interesting, try out a demo if you can, and jump in. It's just entertainment that's all.

well said.

I actually own more 3rd party Wii U games than NIntendo ones. I am yet to say WTF is shit unplayable shit.  They all work within the systems capabilities.
