This sums it up for me, in regards to the story. Not that complex and dark are pre-requisites for a great story, just that Xenogears did it very well.

a: I and Tetsuya Takahashi originally submitted it as a script idea for Final Fantasy VII. While we were told that it was too dark and complicated for a fantasy, the boss was kind enough to give Takahashi a chance to launch a new project. Then Takahashi and I wrote up the full screenplay which contained cutscene-dialogues in final form, thus the project was born.

The works of Nietzsche, Freud and Jung happened to be part of common interests I shared with Takahashi. Xenogears is basically a story about "where do we come from, what are we, where are we going". In that respect, we were inspired by those concepts a lot.

xenogears will always be my favorite rpg of all time. a remake would just make me melt.

Which has a better story? Final Fantasy IX

Which has a better setting? Final Fantasy IX

Which has more interesting characters? Final Fantasy IX

Which has better character design? Final Fantasy IX

Which has better gameplay? Final Fantasy IX

Which was more repetitive? Final Fantasy I

Which has a better sound track? Final Fantasy IX

Which aged better? Final Fantasy IX

Which had a good legacy? Xenogears (Xenosaga, Xenoblade Chronicles)

Which was the better game overall? Final Fantasy IX

Yes I think Final Fantasy wins this one. I would put Final Fantasy IX on everything but I have to give credit where credit is due.

Which has a better story? Xenogears (by a LOT)

Which has a better setting? Both

Which has more interesting characters? Xenogears (again by a lot)

Which has better character design? Xenogears

Which has better gameplay? Xenogears

Which was more repetitive? They were both really kind of repetitive, this is arguable.

Which has a better sound track? Final Fantasy (with an astrisk that states a lot of the music I loved was recycled from other FF's)

Which aged better? Seriously? Xenogears all day due to its use of sprites. Early polygon designs aged HORRIBLY IMO.

Which had a good legacy? Xenogears (Have yet to play a bad Xeno game... Wish I could say the same for FF, and that's even speaking about in recent years.)

Not one of these again. I swear everybody and their mother is trying to take advantage of that trolling SE did with that FF7 announcement.

I'm willing to bet that's why that FF7 vs. FF6 poll came right after it on GameFAQs and then of course here. Automatic DQ.

On that note though:

Which has a better story? Equal

Which has a better setting? Equal

Which has more interesting characters? Xenogears

Which has better character design? Xenogears, but barely.

Which has better gameplay? Final Fantasy 7 by far.

Which was more repetitive? Xenogears, although while the story is incredible, sometimes it drags on for too long.

Which has a better sound track? Final Fantasy 7

Which aged better? Final Fantasy 7 if just because of the gameplay and soundtrack. Xenogears has some questionable sections despite the amazing story....and even in some cases the story makes getting to some boss sections (if you fail to beat them) very frustrating.

Which had a good legacy? They both had good legacy's. Best? Equal once again.

Lube Me Up

Which has a better story? Xenogears

Which has a better setting? Xenogears

Which has more interesting characters? Final Fantasy 7

Which has better character design? Final Fantasy 7 ...I think...

Which has better gameplay? Final Fantasy 7 The mini-games are better, combat moves faster, boss fights aren't spent charging up your lazor. FF7 eventually gives you the world map while Xenogears kinda takes it away from you.

Which was more repetitive? Xenogears Rarely do you have to grind in FF7 for anything save for master materia, Xenogears you gotta grind out your combo attacks, sometimes for what feels like eternity until they pop up.

Which has a better sound track? Final Fantasy 7

Which aged better? Xenogears, because I'll take heavily pixelated 2D sprites on murky 3D backgrounds over Lego men on prerenders any day.

Which had a good legacy? Neither. The best thing that sprang from FF7 was a cameo in FF Tactics.  Other games may put Xeno in their titles, but they aren't related at all IMO.

Which was the better game overall? Final Fantasy 7

This was really tough, as I love both games. And Billy Lee Black is still one of my favorite RPG characters.

Nice.
She's asking about FF7 though

Answering her question wouldn't be fun!

Xenogears wins in every category, and I didn't play the game at all.
