Forums - Nintendo - Xenoblade Chronicles X is so big it almost needed 2 discs

Wikipedia says 25gb per layer.

I reckon they were working on compression and Nintendo approved them using a (the first) dual layer disc.

That doesn't sound like Nintendo offered multi-layered discs. It sounds more like they used their art of compression to fit it onto one disc.

PS3 had games that utilized the 50GB dual layered disc without a hitch. It will be the same with PS4 and X1.

Nintendo doesn't offer the option because they don't think any of their games will require it. I'm sure this may change, but as of right now Wii U is locked to 25GB. That and they don't have the luxury of installing large amounts of data to the flash memory since every Wii U game must also run on the lowest denominator of the 8GB model.

Hence why I just said what I said.

Funny you should mention that.

"We are consulting Nintendo as to whether or not the main data can be read from the console."

For those of you looking at USB flash sticks or SD cards to increase the WiiU's memory..unfortunately you will actually need to get an external hard drive, preferably powered. If not you'll have to use a special usb y cable that grabs power from a second usb slot.

Why? I use an USB-stick and it works fine.

Really? That's not the info I got....grr. My bad...for the advice, and the purchase.

I very much doubt this game will be anywhere near 50GB. We have to be talking about 25GB as the limit. If I remember right, the textures don't look all that detailed and it's not like they'll need to ship high-def textures for PCs set to ultra on the disc. Visual assets are probably not all that large.

The main culprits for large file size are almost always pre-rendered video and audio files.

Regardless, Nintendo really needs to do a better job at memory management next gen. The 8GB model was such a huge mistake and it hurt the entire console down the line.

hahaha wow cool Partypeople. Game is a must have!!! Preorder!

Zelda - Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch.... Incredable!!!

Makes you LOL at Wii U's storage capacity.

This will probably trigger a lot of people to finally buy an SD card or HDD for their console.

not really.

one could argue the 32gb has more value than the other twos 500gb simple becaue you are not forced to install GBs to the system. It is all perspective to what the system is designed to do.

But can the Wii U read dual layers?

The Wii could, so I would assume the Wii U can as well.

yer but remember how earlier models had issues reading dual layer disc. Maybe they hopeing to avoid the same situation.

so if the game is only like 28gb or so they probably would prefer to compress it were possbile down to 25gb

That seems like a closed minded way of thinking. If a game were to ever arrive on Wii U that did require more than 25GB, it'd be very jarring for them to have to resort to using multiple discs in this day and age. The fact this article was even made says they dodged a bullet this time and it may be a reality one day.
