Forums - Gaming - What Games Made You Say "Wow!" in the Previous Generations?

Heya everyone, Cloudman here again with another thread. So this is another thing that I`ve had on my mind that I wanted to discuss, and another member started a similar thread on what defines next generation. So I though it would be a good time to start this one.

So, more so this generation, the 8th gen, I`ve heard people on the internet often say that there isn`t a game that is `next gen` currently, current games are more of the same from last gen, the graphical leap is not very big, and so on and so on...

I sort of feel while the visuals haven`t gotten a much larger boost, I don`t feel it`s as large a leap as previous gens, but then I got to thinking about the previous generations, where there felt there was a bigger "Wow!" factor. I could recall games that really impressed me, so much they convinced me to buy their systems.

For example, on the Wii, I was really impressed with the visuals on Zelda: Twilight Princess. I know it was on Gamecube too, but I was introduced to it on the Wii. It looked like a major upgrade from previous Zelda games and there was so much more detail compared to previous Zelda games. I also really liked Wii Sports! The whole idea of making your own Mii character and then using it to play simple sports games had a real charm, and I would play with all my friends in the dorms in university. Another game that blew me away was Super Mario Galaxy. The visuals, the music, and that landing into Egg Planet was explosive to me. It was just incredible. Honestly, the Wii as a whole impressed me, with it`s motion control, which allowed for new interesting games, like Trauma Center, Silent Hill:Shattered Memories, and Warioware: Smooth Moves.

Next, the 6th generation. My recollections of 6th gen was the Gamecube, and one of the first games I saw was Luigi`s Mansion. I was blown away by the visuals. Before, I was playing games with rough polygons that were acceptable at the time, but seeing the detail of the mansion and the smooth model of Luigi was really great to me! It all looked really wonderful! But what really blew my mind was Super Smash Bros. Melee. I first saw it in Gamestop, or whatever it was at the time, and I saw fast moving action on Mute City with that guitar mix of the song, and my mind was blown. It looked so incredible compared to the first Smash. I got to play a bit and was just completely flabbergasted at what I played. This game sold me on the Gamecube instantly.

But I think the game I was most amazed with was Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64. Before, it was just 2D. There weren`t many 3D games, if any, and this was the first I demoed at a Sears. I was in utter aw. Being able to move around in all directions in a 3D environment, jumping and kicking around, and riding on a koopa shell like a surf board. It was just incredible! This was the time I said "Wow!" the loudest. : )

So yeah, those are some of my pics. Other shorter ones would be Super Mario World, and I was too young to remember the NES days.

Which games impressed you the most from previous generations? You can include current gen too. I think Xenoblade X makes me say "Wow" and I gotta give it to Square and Final Fantasy XV. That is pretty dang "Wow"

Sorry for the long text! I guess this is sort of `system sellers` too, haha...

PS2: Final Fantasy X

PS3: Heavenly Sword

Not necessarily the best looking games I have seen, but these are the ones that when I first saw them I was like "Holy S**t!", although Ninja Gaiden on the NES still blows my mind. Great graphics, great gameplay, awesome cutscenes for it's time.

Edit: Forgot about handhelds so ignore the above sentence

3DS: Fire Awakening

In chronological order

Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Bros 3
Donkey Kong Country
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII (specifically those cut scenes)
Soul Calibur
Rresident Evil Remake
Doom III
Shadow of the Colosuss
Crysis
Assassin Creed
The Last of Us
Infamous: Second Son

The wows have become more subtle, generally based on character models. Funny you say Super Mario64 as I remember seeing that game in 96 and thinking "yuck" to early polygon graphics. Soul Calibur was first polygon game that had in game graphics that wowed me.

Haha, that`s funny! We are complete opposites on this. I think I was more impressed with the smooth controls and being able to move around for the first time. I also really loved the music. You list some games that I also think were really wow, despite me not playing them, like Last of Us and Second Son. I didn`t like tLoU so much, but those were some impressive visuals. And the RE Remake also wowed me a lot! : )

I was too young to know about Ninja Gaiden! >_< I wish I could have played that as a kid. Comix Zone and FFIII were really great! FFIII is one of my most fav RPGs of all time! I missed out on the FF7s after 6. Sadly, I couldn`t get into the models of FF7. They looked like popeye characters, but I didn`t play it when it was new.

The Legend of Dragoon made me wow very hard as soon as I started it, dat gorgeous CG intro, and I kept wowing all along, the first time I saw the dragoon armor too, a lot of scenarios were so beautiful, and lots of other stuff.

Shadow of the Colossus, the colossus were cool since the first, but the third... the one with the big stone sword-like pilar in his arm, slowing swinging that shit trying to kill me, man that was awesome.

Resident Evil 4 was actually the first PS2 (and 6th gen) game I ever saw and I though it was perfection.

Oh Legend of Dragoon... : ) More and more! Double slash! Shadow of the Colossus was really great also. Such a huge world, and the monsters were pretty amazing. RE4 was also excellent. I really really enjoyed that game!

3DS: Fire Awakening

PS Vita: Gravity Rush

I didn`t include handhelds because I had a hard time picking ones I liked a lot on them, but Awakening is one of the best on the 3DS and Gravity Rush is the reason I want a Vita.

TWEwY is such an excellent game. I`m hoping for a sequel some day. : )
