There are millions of kids growing up without Nintendo or any other console.. Angry Birds > Mario for them.. Surely its gonna have an effect on console sales in the future when they want a new iPad for christmas instead of a console.. The aging audience for consoles who can afford buying them is covering it up cause now its ok to have a console for yourself when you are 30+..

i think consoles can increase install-base, just release new consoles every 5 years and make controllers and last gen games compatible.
Having consoles around more than 5 years was not the norm, and games being not compatible neither helped against mobile games.

As long as mobile user have the current mentality of only spending one or two dollars or nothing at all on games it will be limited to the current bussiness model and game types

Mobile gaming alone, probably not. But if you consider that a lot of casuals are playing on tablets and PCs, yes. Definetely the lower overall consoles sales we´ve been experiencing since 2009 every year is a result of the increase of popularity of those two platforms.
Heck.... even some of my friends and family members already gave up consoles and only play on tablets and smartphones now

People can only spend every dollar/euro once.

And they spent over 14.3 billion dollars alone on iOS-Apps last year (over 10 billion dollars paid to developers + Apple's 30%-cut). The revenue of the Android-AppStores included, it will be around 20 - 25 billion dollars spent on apps in 2014, mostly gaming apps.

Like it or not, the mobile market is a huge competition for handheld and consoles an PC gaming.

Us old farts don't like it. Our kids will probably laugh at us though when we tell them we used to have to drive to the store to buy each individual game and played it on a giant shiny disc. To them it will probably seem as antiquated as when our parents told us stories about buying music albums on an 8-track. 

Kids today don't have any qualms with the iTunes model or Netflix, they won't know any different soon enough. I do think there will be a physical Playstation 5 side by side with a streaming service, but there won't be a physical PS6, it will all be cloud based by then. 

It won't happen any time soon maybe in 50 years



PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Mobile games are becoming mostly just arcadey quick fix games, at least that is what most people playing games are doing. Not as many people are using their time to play console-style games on their phone



 Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

I think the people who don't like it are just a vocal minority.  Services like Netflix, and Spotify prove this is a viable future. 

The reason I like things like Netflix is because I typically only watch a TV season/episode once, so there is no reason to buy it. 

 

The reason I like Spotify is that I can listen to way more music than I could before. Yeah it sucks that I don't actually own the music, and I can't freely access it if I cancel my subscription, but I think what you get is worth the price, especially since I get a studen discount :)

Cannot agree anymore. I like to play League of Angels: Fire Raiders when I lie on bed, go to restroom, on the way to school... little pockets of time. But I will still play Dragon Age on my PS, I don't think they are contradictive.
