Forums - Sony - Why did Sony make the Vita if they were planning to make a streaming service anyway?

Sony does not know what they want the Vita to be.It is just a failed product. It is a great piece of tech, but they just let it die.

You're asking why Sony released a handheld in 2011 when they were going to create a streaming service in 2014?

Yes. Why would Sony release a streaning service that would render the handheld obselete?

Oh boy.

PS Now is a full streaming service. Vita is just remote play. Meaning you can play a PS4 game on your Vita if you're right next to the PS4. You have to own the PS4 AND the game. With PS Now you can stream anything available without having to actually own anything.

And who buys a Vita for remote play anyways? This is not a major system selling feature for any type of consumer.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

What? PSNow doesn't stream PS4 games (yet). That service is still exclusive to the Vita.

My Xperia Z3 says hello! (Actually my wife's). remote play is an actual real thing for Xperia Z3 phone and the latest Xperia tablet. And no doubt the remote play app will come to other phones and tablets soon.

@OP. To play Uncharted streaming on a phone or tablet would be highly unsatisfactory without a DS3/4 controller, which means you need 2 devices with you to play the game on a mobile platform. Vita is a DS3/4 controller with screen attached, so far more convenient for PS game streaming, and some people are happy to pay for convenience.

If it wasn't for the fact my wife wanted a new phone, I was pretty much on my way to buying a Vita for remote play, and I still might if I find using DS4+phone to be awkward and frustrating. But I don;t remote play enough right now to justify a Vita purchase just for remote play purposes on an as needed basis. And aside from remote play I have no particular desire to do handheld gaming.

The vita remote play feature is well liked, it only adds value to the new service. And as far as vita is concerned, it's just a feature. Think about the previous generation hyped features pre-launch and their state 2 years later, a lot of them are just forgotten.

A feature lacking interest after a few years is not that bad.
