Forums - Nintendo - Idea that would make Nintendo $1Billion

Nintendo owns a baseball team? What the fuck? When did this happen...HOW did this happen? Nintendo of America is one strange beast.

Long story short (and going off my memory) back in the early 90s the Mariners were going to be sold and likely/or relocated and those of us in Seattle and Washington didn't want that to happen, so a bunch of people who would keep the team in Seattle were asked to buy it and save the club--including NOA and the then president of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi. Yamauchi decided to and was the majority owner of the franchise until 2004 when he sold that stake to Nintendo of America.

Bets:

1. If the Wii U sells closer to 10 million LTD by 1/3/2015 I win. If it sells closer to 9.5 million LTD by 1/3/2015 OfficerRaichu15 wins (winner gets 2 weeks of avatar control)--Lost.

That's not how you "make" money. That's just transferring money you already have from one place to another.

In other word liquidation.

I've been thinking about a way that Nintendo could make a lot of money, and one thing immediately jumped into my mind, but it's not something many of you would expect. Why doesn't Nintendo of America sell the Seattle Mariners? Forbes values the Mariners at around $700 million (http://www.forbes.com/teams/seattle-mariners/), but they tend to underestimate the true value of sports franchises. I could easily see the team selling for around $1 billion. I realise that the Mariners generate revenue for NoA (Forbes says it's $210 million), but I just think that selling the team would be an easy way for Nintendo to make a lot of money very fast. What do you guys think, would this be a good move for NoA?

Unnecessary. It's not like they are hurting for money. But I have a better idea, that they already had. Amiibo. :P

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

Cool idea about making a quick buck, but if I had Nintendo's money already, along with the prestige of owning a team; I would continue to own a MLB franchise team like the Mariners.   And a team that's making them money.

The reason why I thought Nintendo could use a big chunk of cash is because I always hear people complaining that they need to buy more devs and heavily invest in their next gen system(s). Can't think of a better way to get cash fast then by selling your billion dollar sports team.

But they already have the cash to do that without selling anything.

Bingo!!!

That's fascinating. Thanks!

lol I didn't mean like I've been dwelling on this for a while! It's just that after reading so many stories about how Nintendo is losing money year after year, I just thought, "well if they really are losing money annually, why not just sell the team they own."

Short term gain for a long term loss. As it stands currently it would be a bad idea. Ask me again in 5 years though :P
