Both Sony and Microsoft more or less got screwed over by the ever evolving processor space... which Intel has taken over (precisely x86). With IBM barely taking care of the Power processors, and more or less getting rid of all their foundries, you won't get a cheap Power processor anymore. This and the age of the GPUs are keeping the price of the consoles up. This is partly why Nintendo made the Wii U as it is, to give you last gen at a cheaper price (Tablet eats up quite a bit of budget). The addition of a harddrive is also an added cost that wasn't in older consoles keeping the price point higher than normal.
