(i actually thought zelda was a character, i never knew i was playing the zelda main character in smash bros this whole time)

Zelda is a character. She's the princess that Link saves. :)

oh so it's like mario where the it's the same story each game?

Well, yes and no... You see almost every Zelda game is set in a different time from the other (The Exceptions are Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, Legend of Zelda NES and Zelda II, and A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening... all direct sequels from one game to another). Also Gannon/Gannondorf isn't always the main bad guy who takes Zelda. And in some Zelda games she doesn't only appears once or not at all (Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening). And it's not just him taking her at the beginning, there are times he doesn't know where she is and times she even helps you in the final battle!

Link is the main character (who is a MALE! ). Zelda is the princess of Hyrule but is also very strong in her own right, and Gannondorf/Gannon is usually the main bad guy of the series (They are games were he doesn't appear either, but I don't want to spoil anything if you decide to get into Zelda).

what made ocarina of time so much better than the others?

Well, A LOT of Zelda Fans here say Ocarina is OVERRATED which is Blasphemy! (JK... It's okay for them to have their own personal Favorites). It is not so much better than the other in my opinion, but I will tell you why it's the Magnum Opus (best) of the Zelda series.

First it's the first game of it's time to manipulate time within the game (Turn day into night etc.). Also manipulate weather from Rain to shine. And it developed the Revolutionary "Z-Targeting" mechanic (it's basically locking an Emeny with a button and just focusing on attacking him, and to simply switch to another by tapping it again). Also you traveling in time from a Child to an Adult to defeat Link's and Zelda's Arch enemy Gannondorf gives an epic feel to the game as well. That and it's variety of dungeons (Forest, Fire, Water, Shadow, and Spirit), the characters are memorable, theres some female Eye candy (Zelda, Malon, Nabooru). The story is great, the music is beautiful, the items have some of the best abilities TO this day! Has a GREAT TWIST NO ONE SAW coming...

Plus there's this... (MAJOR SPOILERS in that Link below! Warning! Don't click on the link if it you plan on playing Ocarina of time. But it's one of thed best moments in Video Game history IMO).

https://d3esbfg30x759i.cloudfront.net/ss/zlCfzS4LjV8ZXwLJtx

(MORE SPOILERS!! Link lifts an at LEAST a 100 TON piece of granite in that pic... and then he throws it like clothes to a laundry rack. He does this with the Golden Gaunlets... Gaunlets blessed by the Goddess of Power, Din. End of Spoilers).

And those are my reasons.

i can't wait to play it on the wii u

Bit of a few spoilers, no?!

Eh...

I would try both the portable and console versions of Zelda. They are different, but the same. I like the portable games better: Link Between Worlds, Links Awakening, Minish Cap, ect.

I'm on a similar position, I've played OoT, MM, and ALttP all to an extent, but never finished either, "meh" is the perfect word to describe my experience with all of them, they bored me to death and the one that didn't (MM) forced me to do a certain Great Bay temple again cuz' of the time limit, never again. Try playing Metroid games too, those are actually fun, and have many of the elements that the Zelda series is praised for and IMO executes them better.

I'm now filled with determination.

A lot of people make the common mistake that the main character's name is Zelda.

It's obvious that his real name is Ganondorf.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!

I dare to admit that for many years I was thinking that his name is zelda and I was wondering why a guy has a girly name!FACEPALM!

As for the writer,me too, till 2013 because this year I played hyrule warriors and I intend to buy a zelda U!

It's a big stupidity of me that I had never played a zelda game before.

For a start I will buy all 3DS remakes!:P

Tak you disapoint me bro!! The Zelda's are arguably the best series Nintendo has (Only 2nd to MAYBE Mario or Pokémon games)!

That is a GREAT place to start though man... I suggest you play Ocarina of Time 3D before Majora's Mask 3D (MM is regarded as one of the hardest, if not THE HARDEST Zelda game). It'll also familiarize you with the mechanics of Zelda games and the puzzle solving they require.

It's ok neither have I and I really don't plan on playing any in the future lol.

You still have that wii? you can get Ocarina of time and Majoras Mask on the virtual store u can also get the classic zeldas on NES and gameboy through the virtual store aswel (Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 and Link to the past)

Or you can get this (wii can play gamecube games, though u mite need a controller) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B004BLCDXQ/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used&qid=1421649350&sr=8-1-fkmr1 witch includes Wind waker and Ocarina of time (the 2 best zelda games)

Play ocarina of time first as its the best in the series followed by windwaker (come@me)

I recommend starting either with A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time and they're on the Wii VC or you could check out the 3DS remake if you have one.
