Forums - Nintendo - The nintendo AMD arm x86 arq on the next consoles would have backwards compatibility?

Im not a tech expert, i have a doubt.

If AMD arm x86 hybrid arquitecture are really on the next nintendo systems, as rumors say, they would have backwards compatibility?

Backwards compatobility seems to be important for nintendo, but history(PS4 and XBO) says that changing the arquitecture leads to forget aboult backwards compatibility.

So there is my question, is possible (viable)to have backwards compatibility on the next nintendo home console if they choose a x86?

Is possible for the next handheld to run 3DS games?

Well, it is possible if the x86 leap is large enough cause you have to get the x86 cpu to essentially emulate the wiiU's cpu (and a few other things) which takes quite a bit of horsepower to do so essentially, the console has to be as powerful if not more than the ps5/x2

The gamepad will probably have to work with it has well for the games that require it so they need whatever wireless tech is on the wiiU to be on their next console as well. But of course, they can sell the gamepad as an accessory so that it won't hog down the cost of the console

And the CPU on the 3ds is Arm so if their next handheld is also Arm, then it should be able to do backwards compatibility without too much of an issue

lol at anyone thinking nintendo will use x86.

It depends how the architecture is. An X86 system technically doesnt have to be X86 in the actual sense of it. It may sound really contradictory but thats how easiest I can explain it.Everything is not always black and whit. This being one of them.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Well AMD pretty much confirmed it already, so...

As for the question in the OP, it is technically possible if the leap is big enough, but I doubt it will be the case. Even more so since Nintendos Chips are always heavely customized, which makes transcoding even more challenging.

Also, we don't know yet which console AMDs chip will be in. Since AMD also makes chips for tablets (Beema, based on the Puma architecture, a enhanced Jaguar which in turn is used in XBO/PS4), it could as well be just a chip for the 3DS follow-up. Considering the 2016 date announced by AMD, it even seems more logical since the 3DS is over 1 year older than the Wii U and it's hardware rapidly aging.

i dont think wii U sucessor can be near powerfull as ps5.
the only way i though it was possible is to having also a wii U chip on it. but it would probably be too expensive.

Actually, not necessarely. Since the graphics chip will still come from AMD anyway (although the architecture has changed from Terascale to GCN in the meanwhile, it could still be similar enough to include a "Wii U mode"), only the CPU of the Wii U would be really needed, and considering how small that chip alone is on the console's chipset, production cost should't be too high. The software to safely pull this off is an entirely different matter though, but Nintendo already does a very similar thing on the Wii U, which switches between ARM (Menue, browser...) and IBM POWER (games)

If it's powerful enough, of course.

Didn't the PS 3 having 2 chip for backwards compatibilty add to its hefty price at 1st? I'm all for backwards compatibility but being afforable when the gates open is a huge advantage
