PS3: I wanted to play the new entries in the franchises I grew up with in HD. (little did I know, this would not include Crash Bandicoot)
Wii U: I wanted to try out Nintendo's franchises, most of them for the first time. Zelda, Bayonetta, ZombiU, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart, Wind Waker HD, Smash Bros., etc. lured me into the purchase.
3DS: After playing the Wii U for a while, I became enamored with Nintendo's games and wanted the exclusive handheld experiences as well, which included ALBW, FE: Awakening, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Pokemon, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Super Mario 3D Land, etc.

Atari 2600 jr: Because it's the only Atari system i could get in my country. and cuz atari iz da best

Well... I got a PS3 for Tekken 6... Which was delayed a year. So, instead, I ended up getting Tekken 5: DRO on PSN as my first game. Then later, I got MGS4. It was the last Limited Edition at the store.

Now, this time around, I'm waiting for MKX and SFV, so we'll see how that goes. Looks like I'll have a PS4 in april.

X360: GTA IV (had timed exclusivity on DLC) and price. And I was embarassed of constantly asking my friend to borrow his PS2 when I wanted to play Bully, San Andreas or Vice City.

PS4: Wanting to upgrade to next gen, and XBox pissed me off by wanting me to pay for Kinect.

PS3 -- It's odd, but the first factor is that I quite WoW.  I was a 100% PC gamer after the PS2, mostly MMOs.  My best friend and MMO partner passed away during that time, however, which took the heart of playing WoW right out of me.  It just wasn't the same anymore.  A few months later, though, I watched an E3 for the first time in years and got blown away by Uncharted 2.  The press was absolutely raving about it.  That, and the teaser for The Last Guardian are what made up my mind to get a PS3, then the deal they ran where you get $100 off if you get a Sony credit card clinched it.

The funny part is, obviously, that TLG never showed up, but also that I turned out not to be a fan of Uncharted.  All that was completely fine, however, as Valkyria Chronicles was one of the first games I got and I absolutely fell in love with it.

Vita -- Mostly Persona 4 Golden, to be honest, as well as word that other RPGs were coming to the system.

PS1 -- Final Fantasy VII commercial.  I still remember seeing it for the first time.  It was one of those cliche moments were your friend is talking and you completely tune them out because you're sitting there in awe.

SNES -- A rich kid offered to trade it to me for some skateboard parts.  In the deal was a Mario game, NBA Jam, and A Link to the Past.  Pretty sweet deal.  I was like, "are you SURE about this," but he just said his parents would buy him another for Christmas if he wanted it.

Wii U: kids
Xbone: Titanfall
