Wii U needed a price cut badly even before X1 got a price cut. Hopefully MS dropping the price forces Nintendo to drop it as well.

I think Wii U needs a gameless option more than a price cut and let people choose to buy the games they want, maybe more people will also pick up Bayonetta 2.
actually i'd say all the systems are priced pretty well. a ps4 with a great game for 400 dollars is a fairly good price. a crappier version of the ps4 packed with some 3rd party fodder is 350 (xb1). and a wii-u bundled with a fantastic game and a fun distraction for 300 bucks really isn't bad. i think people actually interested in a wii u really aren't going think it's overpriced. At the store i work, we had the 32gb mario3d bundles for 300, or the 8gb skylander bundles for 250. If priced was really that big a deal we would have sold at least 1 skylander bundle. We did not. Not even 1. We did however selll almost as many wii-u's as we did xb1's. People were pretty stoked for that price cut. Those people also really didn't care about nintendo, or were under the impression they were getting a ps4 equivalent at a cheaper price, or were microfans. interestingly enough though, i think the ps4 sold the least of the consols (at my location) this holiday season. People around here are pretty poor though.
I think the people who have issue with the Uprice are the same people that will probably get rid of it within a year regardless. As always i could be wrong though. Who knows, maybe if they made a smash bundle with no gamepad for 250? or MAYBE a smash bundle with smash, Nland, a gamecube adapter and a cube controller for $300?! Do you think THAT would be worth it?
I can guarantee you that the WiiU is not overpriced at all. The name kills the console. (360 and PS3 gamers I know that play games for at least ten years dont know what a WiiU is. Is it a peripheral? an addon? A standalone console?)
its not overpriced because its hardware with a tablet with free online and backwards compatibility. Its just 5x the price of a single game.
So either every game is overpriced too (especially digital ones) Or WiiU is not.
People should just stop buying crappy games for a single year* and then they can easily afford 2 or more WiiU consoles.
*or buy them on PC for a third of the price if you suffer from abstinence syndromes.

They went for market share, just failed in grabing it. PS2 was massively more profitable. Nintendo today has way more financial issues now than they had during the NES/SNES days where they had the biggest share. They guy with the big share can just crush you until your share vanishes.
Nintendo will be lucky to reach GC levels with the Wii U. If you exclude the Wii, they are on a downwards spiral, a lot of it because Sony stole their market constantly since PS1 days.
Nintendo doesn't give poops about what MS or Sony are doing at this point.
They're not in that ball game anymore and haven't been for a while.
They're having enough headaches trying to deal with the impact of smartphones/tablets eating away their strongholds of the kids market/casual/beginner players.

Yes they are in the same ball game, they just screwed up by losing the third parties after trying to court them in 2012.

To fans they are, but fans are kinda like cold war soldiers who don't know when a war is over.
Nintendo hasn't reacted to anything MS or Sony have done in a long time. They simply don't care, in fact Sony/MS are the lesser of Nintendo's headaches right now. I gauruntee you they are more frustrated and worried about smartphone/tablet gaming but they simply right now don't know what to do about it other than double down on the the things they are familiar with (more Mario, more IPs, more family marketing).
Nintendo probably pines for the days when all they had to worry about were Sony/MS, things were a lot easier back then.

Nintendo cannot react to Sony or Microsoft without third party. Their second party can do their dirty work for the genres first party wont touch (as it always has been), but without third party they cannot equate themselves to Sony and Microsoft which share 90% of the same library because of third party. I dont people understand enough that if Nintendo had third party they would have a larger share of the overall marketshare on average. Sony and Microsoft can thank their lucky stars that they don't because Nintendo has some of the strongest first party that if marketed properly with a proper share of third party would pose a threat if they met modern online standards.
