Forums - Gaming - Is the f/tps genre a lesser genre than platforming

Okay so I probably going to insult many nintenbelievers so please don't kill me, as seems to be a trend lately.

On many nintendorelates sites and some topics on this site I read comments like the twins only got shooters (wrong statement but never the less) to defend the so called more diverse Wii U library. Point is first of all there are more playable genres on the twins and second and probably more important is a game with guns in it per definition less than a platformer. Because if I count correctly the nintendo WII U, has NSMB U, 3D world, DKC TF, and Captain Toad which is almost halve of the wii u total exclusives.

What I am trying to say is that where has the idea been formed that platforming be it 2d or 3d is per definition better than shooting or is the motivation by those arguments simply nintendo doesn't make shooters so it is probably a shitty genre (except for 007 on the N64 we all loved that game). Those same people are probably going to love splatoon and are actually a bunch of hypocrits.

But what do you think is one genre per definition better than another or is it just some bs to defend your favourite console/bash other consoles

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Hah, no, that kind of genre elitism is ridiculous and childish. Just people trying to make themselves feel superior. It's all just pressing buttons in the end.

Platformers are probably my least favorite type of game but I don't pretend that it's inherently worse than any other type. Jumping as a main action just does very little for me on a personal level.

Not sure if this is a coincidence but I just said that fps wasn't a lesser genre than platforming in another thread earlier this morning. Did you see that comment and make this thread? Anyways, I believe that people who don't like fps(whether they're just bad or it isn't their thing) tend to hate it simply because it's so popular. Popular things ironically tend to be hated on the most. Either way I don't only think this is a Nintendo only thing though.

Ltd predictions by the time 9th Gen comes out

Ps4:110million

Xbox one :75 million( was 65)

Wii u: 20 milliion

I used to hate FPS games because they made me sick after 30~ minutes of play, less if just watching. Platformer is an older game type, could be viewed as classic or a throwback to simpler times. I dunno, I personally like both, just have more finnicky preferences where FPS is concerned.

What's funny is that a lot of these other games are platformers. Splatoon is a platformer. Infamous is a platformer. Sunset Overdrive is a platformer. Uncharted is a platformer. Assassin's Creed is a platformer. Metroid Prime is a platformer. Portal is a platformer. I'd even argue that Titanfall is a platformer.

It's like people forget that a game can be more than one genre. It never makes sense to me when people talk about loving or hating platformers, yet loving or hating these games based of genre.

Platforming is one of my favorite genres, which is why I can find extra enjoyment out of these games that would otherwise not intrest me as much.

I would say the reverse argument is often made. People sometimes don't seem to think that platformers should be full priced games.

All the genres are equal, but some genres are more equal than others.

The only complain that I see with shooters is that they keep flooding the market. From the 3rd to the 5th generation, platformers and turn-based RPGs were the dominant genres, and I'm sure people complained back in the day. Now the Shooter-Acction adventure genres are more popular, so people critisize them.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I'm absolutely say that about 2D platformers. I don't think they should ever be more than $30. But I love platformers, and I think a lot of games that aren't platformers shouldn't be full price, so maybe I'm not who you're talking about.

I think that's because these people find platforming elements to be in their games to be ok, but find boring games that are centered around it. You can call Uncharted a platformer, but what comes to mind with the word "platformer" for most people is Mario or Sanic jumping into enemies and killing them that way, not Nathan Drake jumping from rock to rock while shooting his enemies.

I'm now filled with determination.

I think you mean to say that they find it boring when platforming is the only thing to do. Uncharted definitely centers around platforming, but it also centers around cover shooting. Uncharted has two part which make it whole, while Mario and Sonic only have the one.

I think that anyone who can only see Mario when they think of platforming is seriously limiting their definition. Sonic and Mario are pure platforming. Uncharted is not, but you wouldn't hear someone say it isn't a cover shooter just because it doesn't have a Gears of War focus on it.

And honestly, I think that people don't like the word "platformer" because the most identified platformers are aimed at children, and so they consider it a juvenile genre, which just makes my eyes roll. Game genres are defined by mechanics, not aethetics. There can, have been, and forever will be M Rated adult platformers.
