My console purchasing History as far as I can remember.
SNES = Sometime in 1992
Gameboy Pocket (With Metroid II) = Sometime in 1996
N64 = Febuary 1997 (With Super Mario 64. It was sold out EVERYWHERE or OVERPRICED when it first came out, would have bought it release date if I could have found one).
Gameboy Color (With Pokémon Blue): November 1998 (Release date)
Dreamcast (With Street Fighter Alpha 3) = October 2000
Gamecube (With Super Smash Bros. Melee) = November 2001 (Release date)
Game Boy Advance (With Mario Kart) = March 2002
Wii = November 19, 2006 (With LoZ: TP. Still remember the exact release date)
XBox360 (Bought it used with CoD: MW, DMC 4 and other games from a friend) = May 2008
Playstation 3 (With Resistance 2) = January 2009
Nintendo 3DS = November 2012
Wii U (With Windwaker HD) = September 2013
New Nintendo 3DS XL = 2015? (Depends if they have an exclusive Zelda Shell)
Playstation 4 (With Street Fighter V) = 2016
So 12-14 consoles... Only 3 on release date...
Bought a 3DS at launch in 2011, a Wii U at launch in 2012, and an Xbox One at launch in 2013. The 3DS library started off slow but was still decent, but the other two took a while to pick up steam for me. This is the only gen I've gotten a home console at launch, but after my experience I'll probably hold off next time.
