Forums - Sony - how much money is the ps3 making Sony?

This is not a debate on whether or not the ps3 has or will recoup the initial losses.

Last week before Xmas week the ps3 sold 7million games retail. Obviously a lot more with digital too. Some of the games are published by Sony so they make more than usual but let's say their weekly software revenue was 70 million for the week. That's a lot of money and on ps3 they look set to sell about 110m retail for 2014. So add on the digital sales, the couple of million ps plus ps3 subscribers along with the small profit each ps3 sold makes and Sony must now be making a lot of money from the ps3. It also has very little advertising costs attached to it.

Anyone want to hazard a guess for 2014 and 2015 profits?

It's arguable, the biggest problem IMO is that it's not as successful as the wii and didn't have as much money from subscirptions as 360.

So either 360 and wii did ton of profit and ps3 did some profit, either 360 and wii did some profit and ps3 is on a slight loss.

Edit : my bad, I'm so tired i misread OP

Edit 2 : Yes I'm utterly retarded. Though I think it's safe to assume no actual numbers can be given on the 2014/2015 profit. Which will undoubtedly be a profit if only ps3 is concerned.

Could you by any chance post something slightly related to the topic?

Probably minimal in the grand scheme. CELL is still expensive even after all the hardware revisions, so they likely don't gain exceptionally much on the hardware end. This far into the system's life, most game purchases are also likely coming from "used" or hand-me-down games so nothing to write home about on the software front either.

Its certainly selling at a profit and had around 2m PS+ subscriptions. So its making Sony money but I think the PS4 PS+ subscriptions is what's making the most money for the gaming division right now.

the cell probably still sets them back some even if not a lot.

This is true, it cost about $2 billion to make the cell, I doubt Sony made $2 billion in profit off the PS3.

Every ps3 is sold for a small profit.  And the 110m retail games sold for 2014 doesn't include second hand just so you know.

I'm not talking about the ps3 not the ps4.  Every ps3 sold for small profit,  2 million ps3 plus subscribers, 110m retail games for 2014,  digital purchases,  dlc, purchases,  assesories and minimal advertising needed. You could be looking at 700-800m ps3 profit for 2014.
