Forums - Sony - how much money is the ps3 making Sony?

the cell probably still sets them back some even if not a lot.

This is true, it cost about $2 billion to make the cell, I doubt Sony made $2 billion in profit off the PS3.

Was the cell not made for a lot more things than just the ps3? Anyway a costly mistake that was. If Sony could go back in time and redo the ps3 they would easily have billions of extra revenue and profit.  If they were not slow out of the blocks they could have charged for psn.

I believe years ago it was making profit, how much I don't remember. I suppose the good hw and sw sales must have made at least some good millions in profit. I also believe PS4 is making profit, but can't confirm.

Not all those games will be sold a the full $10 licensing revenue, as some games will have come down in price, so for easy numbers, let's assume $5, that means sony has taken in half a billion in revenue from software sales. Then I would assume that they're making at least $10 per unit sold, so 3.5m sold this year= $35m revenue. Add onto that the 2million ps+ subs on ps3 (may be more, but that was the figure before the ps4 launched) that's $100m in revenue.

So ps3 game sales revenue + ps+ revenue + PS3 sales profit, I would guesstimate to be $635m. However due to the cost of making some of sony's first party this won't be pure profit, also PS+ will cost them money.

PS+ has made sony half a billion this year :O

Its certainly selling at a profit and had around 2m PS+ subscriptions. So its making Sony money but I think the PS4 PS+ subscriptions is what's making the most money for the gaming division right now.

I'm not talking about the ps3 not the ps4.  Every ps3 sold for small profit,  2 million ps3 plus subscribers, 110m retail games for 2014,  digital purchases,  dlc, purchases,  assesories and minimal advertising needed. You could be looking at 700-800m ps3 profit for 2014.

I doubt its that high. The gaming division hasn't reported profits anywhere close to that figure since like 2004.

Thanks for the reply.  Don't forget Sony make more profit on their own game sales and 100% profit when sell games like gran turismo 6 or the last of us from the ps3 psn. You say possibly 600m profit and after reading your reply I'll play it safe with a 500m 2014 profit from all things ps3 related.

let's do some math.

Sony makes ~$45 from first party retail games. and ~$15 from third party games. So let's just say it makes about $20 on every retail game sold.

VGC had it's ltd software total at 850M. so that's $17B.

this doesn't take into account digital sales, hardware sales (extra controllers, headsets, camera...etc) or PS+ subscriptions

After reading groundkings reply I've gone with 500m. The ps3 is a software beast.

Revenue is way less than that.  They don't make that much on each game on average. Let's keep the debate about 2014 and into the future. That's what my threads about. Thanks

You really believe that? $17bn from software only and they still lost $5bn+ on the PS3? I doubt they get that much money per game sold.

Sony lost Billions on PS3, The Cell chip alone cost them 2 Billion.  Alot of Sony exclusive games Flopped and studios got shutdown. The PS3 was a complete disaster, from a financial perspective.  That 1 month PSN  was down cost them 200+ million. Profit only come's once you have recovered all the money you have lost, which i highly doubt they ever recovered all that back.
