Forums - Nintendo - When will Bayonetta 2 hit a million? Weighing the risk vs the reward.

First of all it was silly and down right stupid of PLAT Games to even release this game as an exclusive on their system.

This game was a game that was released on both Ps3/360. so why would you turn around and release it to a consumer that has no idea what the game is about.

Selling a million units is a stretch. I say 700k lifetime......

Nobody was willing to fund the title except for Nintendo. This has literally been discussed a hundred times on this site, If Nintendo didnt fund it, then it would never have been made.

Sega published the original and wouldn't fund the sequel, I believe I read an interview a while back from one of the developers saying they also asked Sony & Microsoft to publish for them and they declined, they then went to Nintendo and they agreed to publish the title, thus making it a Wii U exclusive.

I want predictions and discussion. If they cannot and Ninendo continues to invest in Platinum to create some illusion that these games sell on their platform (when its their fault that third party doesn't let alone third party hack n slash games) Its going to cause slight bleeding on their budget. The game launched in Japan in September and October in the rest of the world. The reason this worries me is because if they are willing to do this to create the perception that these games can survive on their console, then what tells them that this wont happen again with Platinum or any other third party let alone niche developer? If this was the Playstation 2 era with these sales I would breathe easier...but this is 2014.

The Devils Third is next to take the dive for Nintendo. Platinum already had a game that didnt sell quite well on the WIi U. When will the risk become properly calculated risk?

Its been two months so predictions on legs would be helptful based on Nintendos history.

Explain how its stupid...and I might just cut it off right where it is.

If two million in sales isn't enough for Sega...then how is 450k good enough for Nintendo when Bayonetta 2 obviously had a much larger budget?

Citation needed? Bayonetta 1 had an almost 3-year development period across two platforms. Bayonetta 2 was developed in close to two years for a single platform. Being first-party, Nintendo also gets a slightly larger slice of the profits with Bayo 2 than Sega got with either version of Bayo 1. And, of course, Bayo 1 was made from scratch while Bayo 2 had existing assets to pull from.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bayo 2 was less expensive to make than the first game.

Oh, and while I don't have access to the price history of Bayo 1, I'd take a wild guess that Bayo 2 will stay at full price longer than the first game did.

It won't... also vgchartz numbers for the game are overtracked, so don't take these at face value.

I don't think there is a lot of risk lying on Platinum's shoulders. As long as console manufacturers are clawing for exclusives and Platinum is willing to whore themselves out to them they're gonna have a busy gen.

The question is how far will console companies go (i.e. spend) for exclusives.

If no one wants to pay for their games anymore they're probably ready to be bought up entirely anyway and their games and employees will live on.

Talk about a contradiction.

Well the unknown component here are the console companies. No one can predict how long they will be willing to pay for low selling IPs. The chances of Platinum having steady work in the next 7 years and them getting shut down and bought up in the next 2 years is 50/50.

If they do get bought up I believe a lot of the employees will keept heir jobs and we will see a number of their franchises to be continued. So really the employees of Platinum do not have much risk. It's not them who are losing money.

It probably won't or at least not any time soon but bayonetta doesn't really have to reach 1 million. The reason people should want this game to sell is so Nintendo is willing to publish and fund more games like this. Bayonetta is probably sitting around 550,000 units sold give or take (remember vg charts doesn't count digital copies) I honestly think that is enough to show Nintendo that there is an audience for these kinds of games on their system. Yes it would have been nice if bayonetta 2 sold a million units but if this game reaches around 600,000 units before the end of the year that will probably be enough for Nintendo to give us a bayonetta 3

It not selling 1 million would be a shame because it's an amazing game.
This deserves 6m+.

Why don't Platinum games sell well and why does "niche" even exist.
