They probably can compete directly with Sony and MS. The thing is, they don't want to. It would be very expensive and their games doesn't need very powerful hardware to look good.

I think we're confusing casual with family friendly here. The Wii was more casual than PS3 and 360, but PS4 and Xbox Juan are more casual now probably, since Wii U's casual offerings failed miserably. The Wii U is still more family friendly though.

Anyway, to answer the OP, I don't think Nintendo are going to abandon their path any time soon. If anything, they're more likely to go off on ever weirder tangents, like QoL.

Yup, and I called it way back when Wii was at the height of its popularity. Nintendo is pretty much Jaleel White's Steve Urkel, they're so well known for this one thing now that they may never find success doing anything else.
