Forums - Gaming - Hatred removed from Steam - UPDATE: It's back again

As the platform owner ofcourse Valve has any right to do as they please, but because Steam is a very very important store in the PC space it's also our responsibility as consumers to react with a healthy amount of criticism if a decision made by Valve seems inconsistent with existing practice, especially if they give no good reasoning for said decision.

How does praying one thing and doing the opposite not make you a hypocrite?
They have the right to judge how they want so that we can say that their judging is weird and has a double standard. The thing is apparently that they have an exact measure of what is too much backlash and it would be interesting to see how they define it. Because I've seen a lot of backlash against other shit games that Valve continues to support with their platform.

And as Jim wonderfully said, if their argument is that this game doesn't belong on Steam because they don't like it, it means in return they do like all the other broken shit that is on steam and that they're happy to enable scumbags that put broken games on the platform to scam people.

The issue is not with what they did but what they didn't do.

Nonsense. If Jim, whomever that might be, has said that since Steam has refused one game because they don't like it that somehow means they like everything they do allow then he doesn't understand how to make a reasonable argument and he should not put his opinions out in the public space unless he wants people to make fun of his mental faculties.

And Valve is not saying one thing and doing another. All they are saying is that they find one particular game too offensive for their platform, and so won't allow it. That doesn't mean that they are obligated to ban everything else that random people like yourself and the rest of the internut peanut gallery think should be measurred to the same standard. The only thing that matters is that Valve, the platform owner, has decided that there is a difference between this game and other games in their eyes and that they don't want to touch this game.

I suggest you adjust your tone. I will let it slide this time.

If they're not hypocrites they must have a clear definition of what is too offensive and what is not. What this definition is, nobody knows. Which makes their practice intransparent and as that criticizeable.

Let's just take Hatred out of the picture for a minute and talk about the shit they actually publish. Broken games and other nonsense. You know, the stuff the likes of EA and Ubisoft are permanently criticized for. Is it ok to criticize them for that? Last time I checked this is an offense punishable by being named the worst company of the world.

The reason why this is a big thing now is that people have pleaded for a long time for Valve to take some action and clean up the mess that their storefront has become. Yet they did nothing. And now suddenly they take action, but not for the things that their fans would've wanted but just to ban a random game. Don't you think that left a lot of people disappointed as they apparently care about their image when it comes to offensive violent games but don't give a shit when it comes to games that are offensive not because of their content but because they're a broken product that is actually sold for real money?

That's the real problem here. Hatred as a game isn't even the important part. It's that Steam seemingly acts randomly without listening to any feedback its fans give them. That's a bad thing to do when the current trend is actually companies listening to their customers.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Good decision.

It is ridiculous that Steam pulled this.  If they are going to turn down games that their users request in mass, don't have voting for a game to come to Steam in the first place.  Just put up what you want.

I also don't get peoples overreaction to Hatred.  There have been other games like Hatred before, but just because it has better graphics than those previous games, it's "evil."  I mean, all this game really is is a remake of the first Postal.  (Edit: Guess posting the vid didn't work, so here's a link.)

And also, watch just about any GTA5 playthrough and around half the time is spent "murdering" innocent people when the player is just screwing around.  Hell, the main enemy you kill in the game are officers of the law just doing their job.  And that's not even mentioning the innocent civilians you harm/kill in the main storyline.  To me it just seems like people like to fake like they are better than others because they find that shooting/stabbing polygon characters is unacceptable and upsets them in one game, but are completely fine shooting/stabbing similar polygon characters in other games.  Usually coming up with poor reasonings as to why its okay in the games they enjoy.

The funny thing is... Postal is actually being remade, lol. Let's just wait and see if that gets approved by Steam (Probably will though) =P

Lol, probably will.  Mainly because of the name recognition, I'm sure it will get a somewhat well known publisher who will pay to have it put onto online stores, maybe even the PS4/XBO.

I think it's pretty obvious and understandable why there has been an uproar about this game; serial killing? seriously? it would be one thing if it were like a stealth game or something weird like that, but literally rampaging with a machine gun, killing your neighbors as your main goal? does no one take school shootings seriously? in the past I don't think video games have truly been the responsible cause for desensitized youngsters who kill go on massacres, but after a game like this (potentially) is released it would be hard to not think it could have a strong effect on some minds

as for why Valve removed it- it's not an issue of the Green Light program or allowing people choice- it's the reality that they don't want to be sued or attacked in the future or held responsible for anything

you issue this game for sale and then some kid ends up going on a school killing spree who happened to play it a lot- and guess what? Valve gets sued off the wazoooooo by the kids family after he is shot by police or whatever ends up happening. it's just too risky

this game is gross. I think it's lame that Target of Australia banned GTA5; at least in that case you have a game about being a criminal- yes- but all the same a story based game with many different elements... some of which are not particularly bad and involve choices. In this 'Hatred' game its literally about mass murdering innocents in extremely graphic manners. something like this is not healthy for society nor reflects well on it. people deny that humans are becoming more and more desensitized but how can you argue otherwise when a game like this comes out?

I respect Valve's decision and think its the smartest one. it's simple- ethically this game is awful and frankly legally it even may not be released in many regions when all is said and done

I'm not sure what their past actions on this subject is, but I wonder if they felt the game deserved an "AO" rating based on what we know about the game. Console makers refuse to have AO games on their consoles and I think Valve might just be following the standard.

this; if the game is simply about mass murdering your community than it will not pass a rating level to be allowed on consoles. Valve is just acting before people get invested and have expectations about it on Steam

it's a tinyyyyyyyyyyyy bit more graphic than Postal. duh.

at any rate Postal 2 was banned in some regions. this is more extremely than that though and it appears much more serious. I think the tone is the problem. why would anyone want to play a game where they murdering people for absolutely no reason over and over? generally games have some degree of plot and this one appears limited in that department....

As far as I know, its only objective is mass murder of the innocents. Why would you be surprised Valve removed it? o.O

if you seriously do not grasp why a game SPECIFICALLY about mass murdering your community is DIFFERENT than GTA then you are hopeless.
