Just a half-brained thought, you could just have a screen with the buttons actually coming out of the screen itself.

Now, THAT would be interesting!

And highly unpractical.

Why? I'm not suggesting that they actually build buttons right in the screen, rather that the screen could be used as in mobiles (and mobile games) but with the addition of slight indentations in the screen for your thumbs instead for those sloppy "buttons" real mobile games use.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

That's actually a different tech that exists where the screen pops out a bit to give buttons some depth. I'm saying holes in the screen where buttons come through. It would block out a portion of viewable area, but in most games those areas aren't super important anyway, and could instead allow for a full screen handheld. Instead of one with all that bulky plastic.

Hmmm I don't like that as much :P I don't what REAL buttons sticking out of my screen, that's just ugly

I think first person games can benefit from this where the outline of the game screen's border changes dynamically to certain situations. Top-down or isometric perspective can benefit from this as well with the game screen's border shaped just like the area of a room/overworld. Combined that with 3D and it can produce a hologram like display.

One thing the 3DS' 3D screen lacks is the the screen has to share space with a speaker and a camera. If I can play a game with good 3D effects like Super Mario 3D Land with a top screen that is entirely a screen, the 3D effect could make the levels pop out like a hologram.

basically, current displays have their circuitry within the bezel, the area around the edges of the screen or behind it (though the side usually make it thinner).
For example, running through all the edges of the 3ds is the circuitry. All that plastic conceals it.
Alternatively, free-form displays have the circuitry actually running through the screen. Obviously, this allows manufacturers to save tons of space by hiding all the circuits within the screen so they can make devices smaller.
It also allows for every manufacturer to have a distinct and unique design, which will help differentiate from other products.
It's a very exciting piece of tech, and I really hope both sony and nintendo use it in a creative way.

Exactly!

It's for QOL most likely. Nintendo can't do that to handhelds.

3DS has a rounded edge. Could it be for an edge-to-edge screen?

I understand the usage of shaped displays in cars or the like, but for gaming? What's wrong with normal rectangular screens?

Nothing, but after reading what theproof00 wrote, those displays could be used to create handhelds with smaller bezels, thus leading to smaller plastic cases and smaller handheld consoles.

Basically this could allow for handhelds to keep their big screens while being smaller enough to fit our pockets... again.
