I am so confused and excited right now =P

Not really. A re-release can only do so much. The very cheap 2DS didn't do much before and now something that will split up the userbase will add years to its longevity? |
Well,Well!I m too tired discussing that all the time!New3ds/xl outpaces dsi in Japan, stopped the decline and is monthly yoy up for media create and same with 2013 for famitsu,so waiting new3ds/xl perfomance in the west is a good suggestion....!
Who will downgrade from 3ds and particularly 3ds xl to 2DS or who would prefer a back seat console over 3ds and especially 3ds xl?Just those who care for the price and they aren't many, plus that the difference is only 70$ with 3ds xl so the lure is negligible!:P
when you think theres no more ideas for a gaming device, nintendo brings something.
If they could bring new gaming experiences with it, than, aproved.
But the problem lies there: "What's more, costs for such screen will probably be quite high"

Why is that irrational? It released in 2011 and sales peaked long ago. It is now falling. We're probably looking at less than 10m sold in 2014, which is a 30%+ drop in one year. In 2015 it should drop further to something like 6-7m and sales in 2016 will be very low and begging for a successor. Nintendo can't sustain their business on less than 5m handheld sales and less than 4m console sales per year. |
Why not? 2014 Sold is going to be around 7-8mil next year drop will be much smaller or maybe even better close to flat YoY. That leaves 2016/2017 as its final years (maybe like 4-5mil sold each) then a successor. Also its more about SW sales at this point for the 3ds. Nintendo can sustain their business with a 4-5mil sold year if SW are still great, no need to rush something^

QOL device, maybe? I doubt this is for a handheld.

My thoughts as well. Pretty interesting concept though.
If true, lets just hope it wont end up at the cost of too much performance but not enough gain to justify the performance in the users mind

For example, running through all the edges of the 3ds is the circuitry. All that plastic conceals it. Alternatively, free-form displays have the circuitry actually running through the screen. Obviously, this allows manufacturers to save tons of space by hiding all the circuits within the screen so they can make devices smaller. It also allows for every manufacturer to have a distinct and unique design, which will help differentiate from other products. It's a very exciting piece of tech, and I really hope both sony and nintendo use it in a creative way. Just a half-brained thought, you could just have a screen with the buttons actually coming out of the screen itself. |
Thanks for explaining, I wasn't getting it. So at the very least, this should result in more free space within the system itself, for a larger battery perhaps?
