Forums - Sony - Sony Not Thrilled About 20th Anniversary PS4 eBay Sales

Sony UK executive Fergal Gara is not too thrilled that some people are selling their limited-edition, 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 systems on eBay, though he understands this can't be stopped.

"That's not what we want to see happen," he told Eurogamer about the eBay auctions for the rare PS4s, some of which have sold for thousands of dollars.

"It's inevitable some proportion of that will happen, and very hard to prevent it completely" -- Fergal Gara

Gara went on to say that Sony intentionally only announced where fans could buy the commemorative consoles--with only 12,300 being made worldwide, they are indeed rare--through channels that require "fan knowledge."

"It's inevitable some proportion of that will happen, and very hard to prevent it completely," Gara explained about the eBay sales. "We did think things through. But in each and every case, the way you get hold of one of these consoles requires some fan knowledge, so we're trying to tap into the people who love the brand the most, and put them at an advantage, because they're the people who keep us in business, who inspire this whole 20 year legacy."

The 20th Anniversary PS4 consoles went on sale last weekend during PlayStation Experience andsold out almost immediately. For more on the commemorative console, which is modeled after the Original PlayStation and sells for $500, check out GameSpot's unboxing video above.

Sony should really have ran some sort of contest for them. Like still charge people to buy them. But offer the consoles first to people who are active PS players i.e. lots of trophies, purchases, game time registered etc. No just to 100 random chavs in London who aren't working so they can get to queue up

They just wish the would've sold them for a few thousand a pop themselves

What did they expect? Thats what happens when you create a super limited edition.

I get that. But at the same time I would have gladly sold one if I'd got one. The amount they were going for was insane and they weren't even that different from regular PS4s.

They'll probably be worth more down the line

This is to be expected everytime a limited edition version of anything comes out.

Is he saying that people who pay thousands of dollars for the console aren't big fans of the brand?

I guess they should've just sold it from the start for at least $1000 that might've had some slight media and fan backlash but that would've kept most of the resellers at bay.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I always find it really sad when someone buys a product just to sell it with profit because they know it is limited. When the PS4 originally launched I saw tons of people buy one and sell them on for up to €700 (€300 more than the original price!!!!) because they know they were out of stock.

They have every right to sell something they've purchased or acquired legally. Fergal Gara (weird name) should get over it.
