Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Does Mario Maker mean 2D Mario will likely be on hiatus for a while?

Dont panic.
There will be a NSMB on 3DS and wii U sucessors.
They seems to be easy to develop and sell very well. Let them milk and earn money for giving us true 2D plataformer experiences, like DKC.

Given the history of the NSMB franchise, we've seen game per game system. There was the first one on the DS, the second one on the Wii, the third one on the 3DS and the fourth one on the Wii U. So I don't think we'll be seeing another one until the 3DS's successor or Wii U's successor is released.

However if Mario Maker proves to be a success, you better believe we'll see another one on the 3DS.

I wonder if Mario Maker is successful, will they try to incorporate it into the next 2D Mario or keep it a standalone franchise.

I think it would be neat if New Super Mario Bros 3 simply had Mario Maker features built into it.

Either way I don't expect another mainline 2D Mario until 2017.

The new footage of this looks awesome. Has it been confirmed yet that levels can be traded with friends online? If so this is gonna be a great game to bolster the Miiverse community

I'm fairly certain it has. It would be crazy not  to.

My favorite art style has to be Super Mario Advance 4. It's the SMB3 style but in 32/16 bit!

Oh yeah, that style was great, definitely one of the best.

I hope I never see a 2D Mario again until the start of Nintendo's next home console.
