I think (although 2025 is a bit hard to predict for me cause idk how to market will be by then) that there will always be room for handhelds provided the "exclusivity games" are there. Like, as an example, we have phones and we have some that are quite cheap but "portable media devices" like the itouch and mp3 players stil exist and there is a market for them. If Nintendo can get the pricing right with it being sub $200 and $40 quality exclusives such as Pokemon, I think handhelds will continue to exist from Nintendo. What I kinda wish what Nintendo would do and I know they will never do it but I wish they did is make a deal with Google! See, Apple has 3 main markets when it comes to portable/mobile devices. 1) phones 2) tablets 3) multimedia devices (like itouch/ipod)... So google has competed with them in phones quite successfully and Android has taken over iphone in terms of market share a long time ago. They are still pretty weak in the tablet market but they are still selling and have some market share. But what they havn't really gone into is the multimedia devices department! Sure, there are some android devices from Samsung that essentially does the samething as an itouch but the market share is soo little that it doesn't even matter and Google themselves aren't really trying anything in that space. So, if Nintendo and Google made a deal and Nintendo's next OS was powered by android, the handheld would have all the games from Google Play so the third party aspect won't really be an issue and you have Nintendo exclusive games which will sell the handheld for Nintendo and gain market share for android in that space as well. But alas, it will probably never happen! Yes, it is technically a shrinking market but it is a market non the less and I do think partnering up with Google would secure them the future in the handheld space! |
If they didn't fuck them they could have gone with sony for a handeld though.
I think you're right about handelds not disappearing, especially when they could have a great success in asian markets (China and South Korea both have terrible commute time).
And stuff with google will never happen because google is a clever company. Noone would want a hardware contract with nintendo after n64.

PSP was 480 X 272 (130,560 pixels) while 3DS is 800 X 240 (192,000 pixels) while also supporting a second screen of 320 X 240. Facts good sir, facts.
P.S the 3DS games look better in the vid......

Yes, it's way, WAY more retarded. /SP reference

Doubt it. Tablet games are beyond HD so Nintendo's next handheld will need to be at least 1080p. It's really not much to ask....

I fast checked, my bad.
Though i did think the psp games looked way better in the vid.

loool, this is hilarious and very possible.
but 2025 is a long time away and the market would have completely changed. I really believe before then we will see a big budget console RPG.

On what console?? The Wii "not even Pokemon could sell me" U, or the Nintendo "insert stupid name here" which will sell even less.
The time for a big budget console RPG from Pokemon was the Wii and they passed on it, now the best thing they have (yes Im going here) is a Pokemon MMO and even that may not be successful enough with competition from the handheld games and the slowly shrinking fanbase to move enough home consoles
