Forums - Nintendo - Why Nintendo should stay first party

If they could retain the quality they have and go PS exclusive or a second party to them, then I'd be down. I grew up with Nintendo and own every console they've made but lets be honest, unless things change, they're going to go out of business unless they put their games on someone else hardware. Their sales have been declining every single console they release sans the Wii, which sold to a completely different demograph... one which left the party years ago.

I find that rather funny. Cause, lets be honest, unless things change, Sony is going to go out of business and MS is going to pull out of gaming lol. Nintendo keeps making profits on their consoles even though they are selling less, MS has never stated they have ever made a profit from the Xbox division and Sony has been in dire straights for the last decade and is using the PS brand as a life preserver. With that, if either or both MS and Sony leave, many third parties are likely going to have to take extreme actions to change their business models or go belly up.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

SteamOS is not all it's cracked up to be. The vast majority of games still don't support Linux and that is what SteamOS is, must of the support is coming from indies, most of the big games still only support Windows. I do think PC gaming is a great way to go without doubt, but it has little to offer on the side of the great exclusives offered by any of the big 3. Unfortunately PC gaming is still highly plagued by piracy and that doesn't help any of the developers or publishers, so again, belly up.

We can add to point five, that it isn't a given that games keep the quality if they go third-party, as illustrated by Sega. In fact, we cannot name one example of a game company going successfully from first- to third-party. We do for the other way - Nintendo produced a few games for other system before the NES.

NES was 3rd gen. Nintendo had a 1st gen console (the Nintendo Colour TV-Game), so are you saying Nintendo were 3rd party during the 2nd gen? As in... they went from being 1st party to 3rd party once already?

For instance was Mario Bros. released on Atari-machines:

Platform(s): Arcade, Famicom/NES, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Virtual Console, Game Boy Advance (as secondary game in Super Mario Advance series), Nintendo GameCube (in Animal Crossing), ZX Spectrum, Game & Watch

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Bros.

Also Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Popeye were released on non-Nintendo machines (I count Arcades as Nintendo-machines in that case).

 I see you are an oldschool gamer like me I've had.....Pong,Atari VCS (2600),7800,Atari 800xl computer, NES,Super NES,N64,GameCube,wii and wii u,sega master system ,dreamcast,playstation 1,2,3,xbox,xbox,360 and xbox 1

steam os is growing an growing, but if it fails, windows isnt that bad.

and pc exclusives are the best!  there are genres that are pc exclusiv, and there is so much modding.

and piracy is ust a problem if the game is bad.

Paradox Interactive games are  the easy to pirate, mostly single player(m is fun, but the most people dont have enough nerd friend or time to play a 40h match), no copy protection at all(you can play mp with pirated games), small size. but they are saleing more and more with every new game, and they are saleing alot of dlc(some good, some overpriced bullshit), and that even with great modsupport an shittons of mods.

Yes, they HAVE. But like I said before, IF that continues, they won't forever. You can't make consoles and have 9 million units ship over 5 years time and stay in business. That's my point.

Unless something changes, Nintendo's going to have to figure out a different way to sell their games.

3. They don't try to squeeze every penny out of your wallet

At this point, both of Nintendo's main competitors force you to pay an annual fee to enjoy the online multiplayer features of the games that you have paid full price for. Microsoft still refuses to standardize rechargeable batteries. Instead, play and charge kits are advertised as the premium option for those willing to pay a little bit more money. And let's not even get started on the whole DRM scandal - We all know about Microsoft's hopes and intentions with this move and how it permanently damaged their Xbox brand's reputation.

Sony decided not only to make memory cards required to save your progress in PS Vita games, but also made SD cards incompatible with the system. Thus forcing you to pay for their overpriced memory cards which, by the way, are locked to your PSN account. Meanwhile, Nintendo stores save files onto the 3DS game carts themselves. And the content stored on SD cards, including full software releases, can be freely moved to your computer or anywhere else, in the event that you need some more memory storage and the SD cards you own are not quite enough.

Ya Nintendo does this too, instead of getting costumes or weapons for free like other games give for pre-ordering the game now you have to spend $13 on an amiibo, and that's only for 1 costume/weapon, each one is an extra $13.  Also releasing multiple versions of the 3DS to get people to double dip, if they weren't trying to sqeeze evey penny out of you then the 3DS and 3DSXL would have launched together.

Generally speaking though I would Nintendo is more careful about these things. Amiibo was a concept that pretty much had to happen after Skylanders, everyone in the industry was asking when Nintendo would do their own version. That said I think Nintendo tends to look at the game industry in the longer term, they don't nickle and dime their consumer base as much because they know in the long term if the gamer is dissapointed with something it's not good business for them either.

Nintendo is quite conservative with the paid DLC they've done -- only a small handful of games and they always make sure the main game is complete, never relying on DLC to make the consumer feel like "oh I have to pay another $10-$20 to get the full game here".

When people were asking when Nintendo would make their own version of skylanders I don't think people imagined the amiibo's being used to unlock items that are normally given for free as pre-order bonuses.  They do release full games, its sad that has to be stated as a big positive, but I guess in this day and age it is.

Actually, Nintendo staying first party is for the good of the rest of the industry.

First, every third party would have to compete with fkin Nintendo! You'd have almost no chance releasing a kart racer, a platformer, or a Zelda like adventure.

Second, the side who'd gain Nintendo's favor (Sony or MS - more exclusives, better features, etc) would have a dead serious situation in their hands.

Another point is that they'd suck up so much money and sales from companies like Ubisoft, Capcom, EA, etc that more'd have financial problems, even closing down.

If anything, Nintendo should go handheld only, and strengthen their position there.
